Trying to get registered so I can sign up for some upcoming tournaments. Paperwork is signed by the appropriate instructor, all pics are in place etc., but it's been on "pending" for a while now with no movement. I've also canceled and restarted the process but I'm here.
I dont see how to contact anyone about it within the website. Any suggestions?
Instructor is Ricardo Miller. I'm brown. I canceled and started over because the first time was stuck for a few weeks. Since I've restarted it's been stuck on pending since June.
They are very frustrating if you have any "problems" questions or issues. I haven't renewed the last couple years. because after a bunch of years registered they wanted me to re-do all my signatures for some reason. I('ve had ONE teacher since I started). Then, like you, the process was "perma-frozen" .
I just don't want to support them anymore. I don't care about them. The whole enterprise is a giant rip off anf they treat "regular" members with distain.
When my students compete, it's usually in the SJJIF tournaments or JJ world league tournaments anyway. Everything is more student & coach friendly.

You need to start your email with...
"don't you know who I am?"
Were you ever registered with them as a black belt? If yes...seemed weird that they would need all of the signatures again.

My thoughts EXACTLY.
I've been a BB for about 12 years and been registered as a BB with them for about 6 years.
I've never been to a Brazilian DMV, but I have a feeling this is what it must be like.

They just plain suck.
How do they treat you for purposes of your black belt degrees/stripes? Are you a 2nd degree in their system?

No. I am still just a "black belt" w/ the IBJJF. But, I haven't made any efforts in that direction. Not sure I ever will.
$400 for the original cert, then $150 for renewal (which I'm guessing is annual (assumption 2)). So to get 2 stripes would cost $400 + $150*5 = $1150.
This assumes that they will only give your stripes if you are certified ... I might be wrong but I think that is the case.
Would love to hear about the exact price from someone who has actually gone through the process (as I have a lot of assumptions and can't find a page on their site with the exact details).
$400 for the original cert, with membership renewal each year ($35/year)
$150 is for the next blackbelt stripe and certificate ... plus the cost of the required referee's course which has to be re-done within 12 months of when you apply for the stripe...
The graduation guideline doc has the requirements pretty well laid out (but not the costs):
OP, your instructor has to log in to his IBJJF account and hit 'aporove'
The IBJJF has historically been a nightmare but they are getting way better. Over the last year we've had dozens of people fill out their paperwork and the approval request is on page within a day in most cases.
Depends. If you were registered steadily w the registration w your black belt card (which is stupid as fuck that you can get that card but if you skip even one year they see you as not being active so they don't recognize that time of you training and teaching but I digress) and hadn't gotten your black belt diploma what they would do is have you do the ref course, get cpr certified, pass a background check and then charge you 400 and that would have you as a 2nd degree w them. And again that is ONLY if you have been steadily registered w them for 6 years as a black belt. So if you say registered and then didn't renew for 2 years and then came back and been registered the last 4yrs, you would be recognized as a 1st degree black belt only and wouldn't be eligible for your 2nd degree for another 2 years.
Lets say if you are a 3rd degree black belt and registered w the federation for the black belt card (which is only good for competing in reality) but haven't renewed in the last 8yrs. In their eyes you are a black belt w no stripes, so if you go for the diploma you would do all I said and pay $400 and JUST be recognized by them as a no degree black belt and thats it. They wouldn't see you as a 3rd till after you stay registered w them steadily for 9yrs, pay 150 every 3 years for a stripe and do the course stuff again and again. I swear how brazilians organize things is worse than any US govt institute.

I've been registred with them as brown belt since 2014, got my black in 2015, and have registered since then with no breaks. Can i just pay my $35 renewal few for another 5 yrs and they would recgonzie me as a 3rd degree BB then?
I'll never, ever forget all the many, many hours the IBJJF spent personally teaching me jiu jitsu over the last two decades.
Through the injuries and periods of frustration, the IBJJF was always there to encourage me and show me just how important it is to believe in yourself.
I can never forget the feeling of the IBJJF telling me how much it believed in me and how great if felt to hand it that gold medal after so much work and anxiety.
As I have gotten older and started to teach, the IBJJF has started sharing with me little tricks it has learned about teaching BJJ to people; things I had noticed as an IBJJF student, but never really paid attention to. NOW they all make sense.
I don't really have a way to truly "thank" the IBJJF for all the time and energy and effort that went into teaching me jiu jitsu, other than to try and pass that knowledge --and voluminous paper work-- on to someone else.

Again you would have to do the following:
- Keep up w your normal membership
- Do the background check
- Do their ref course
- Get CPR certified for that year
- And pay that $400. Your first certificate for recognition for them will be 400 no matter what. I have been a black belt for 4yrs now and skipped being apart of the IBJJF for 2 years. They won't recognize me as a 1st degree till 2021 as a result even though thats what I am from my teacher. It is what it is, as like I said brazilian logic is never that logical.

Wow ... this gets worse. Crazy for those running schools and want to one day give black belts.

If I dont miss any years, could my 1st certifcate of recognition be when I am due for my 3rd degree BB if that is when I chose to pay my $400? If they said I havent served my time, they can see my proof as being registered and competing under them for 9 years as a black belt which would be hard to argue with
Soul Gravy - I've always assumed they have such ridiculous requirements and hoops to jump through because they're afraid of an outsider wrecking their clique. Doesn't look good having walk-ons show up their good ol' boys Brazilian network.
