What if it was a max 20 point per round system. You have two categories - stand up and ground game. Judges give you a score out of 10 for each category. If there is no take downs then the ground game does not get a score and the max would be 10 points. But say if one fighter dominated the stand up for half the round but got taken down and was held there for the rest you could potentially have an even round . But if the fighter with the takedown did more damage or nearly got a submission he might win the round because although he lost the striking he was more effective overall on the ground .
King of the Cage tried something like that years ago. It was a disaster.
No system will work if you continue to have incompetent judges using it.
The scoring in MMA is fine...Could maybe be tweaked a little bit but it's pretty rare a fight is scored completely wrong and everybody agrees...Usually what happens is there will be a close fight where people are divided on who won and half the fans will say the judging is horrible blah blah blah and the other half with argue that it was a fair decision when the reality is the fight could have gone either way and no matter who the judges scored it for there would be a large group of fans saying the judging is horrible and it was a robbery.
