I'm Blown Away...

We are currently working with both SureFire and GG&G
on a new DVD on Impact weapons which will include the
SureFire Combat Light and the GG&G Tactical Impact
device.

SureFire sent me another shipment of sample lights for
the video yesterday. There has been a major
innovation.

SureFire now has it's own integrated "defensive end"
on some of it's lights. This removes the need for a
GG&G TID. But if you have an older light the TID is
perfect.

The new defensive end is "wicked". On there new E2D
Defender Light there is one one the front(bezel) and
back (tailcap).

On the big daddy M3 Combat Light there is a huge one
on the front... About the size of a 50 cent peice.

I will be doing a web page on these implements this
week.

They certainly look very cool. I especially like that with the E2D you can strike better with the back end of it, I just wish it were a bit longer.

I'm a bit skeptical about the uses of a TID-type end in a flashlight though. What is it supposed to be used for? Cutting and tearing? Pain compliance?

A few things have crossed through my mind: ripping the skin of an attacker with a TID will make him look worse for wear than he really is if you end up in court. Also with a name like "defender" or especially "tactical impact device" (I'm not 100% sure TID stood for that) the flashlight might not seem so non-weaponlike anymore in front of a jury.

"""What is it supposed to be used for?"""

Skull crushing.

Bashing heads in.

Flattening noses.

Carving chunks of skin off any part of the anatomy.

ad nauseum...

My thought too membrane.

"the flashlight might not seem so non-weaponlike anymore in front of a jury. "

Just out of curiosity how would it ever land in court?

"Just out of curiosity how would it ever land in court?"

Criminal charges victim with aggravated assault, case goes to court, victim required to show flashlight.

So after you beat this guy to a pulp you wait around for the cops/ambulance/witnesses/etc? Why?

"So after you beat this guy to a pulp you wait around for the cops/ambulance/witnesses/etc? Why?"

No, you don't, but shit happens and you won't always be able to make a clean getaway. Winesses, license plate, security camera, all kinds of crap could happen.

So in the off chance that you may get caught AND it goes to a jury you forgo a better tool for the job? Has anybody on this forum been taken to court for defending themselves? If so how did it go? If not is the fear of litigation stopping you from even carrying a weapon, or do you carry one and that fear keeps you from ever using it?

Carrying this thing in itself could be a crime, if it fits under definitions of prohibited weapons in particular jurisdictions.

In my opinion a regular E2E without a tid would be a better tool. Equally useable as an impact weapon, very "sheeple" friendly (had mine on an airplane) and has a politically correct name. A flashlight with a purpose built impact / skin tearing end might very well be classified as a weapon, not an everyday tool. I believe that a lot of places prohibit people from carrying any kind of purpose built weapon (aside from a gun and a permit).

In many cases simply "defending yourself" is going to
be a crime!

WFT are you talking about????

if your hold a flashlight in one hand, that same hand cant hold the gun properly - the whole reason for the switch on the butt end is so yo can use the "Harries" technique (which I personally think is F'ed up - since the gun is going to recoil upwards, your arm supporting your shooting arm really does nothing in the way of control. A reverse harries - or arm on top of your shooting arm helps stableize the weapon much more efficiently - IMO)

"the Harries technique is LAME, dude. It's slow and it hurts your recoil control"

uh, isnt that what i said?

"I SAID, is so that the weak hand thumb can both hold the light and manipulate the switch, WITHOUT hurting your regular 2 handed grip on the gun."

and what i said - is HTF do you do that - the correct 2 handed grip is designed in such a way that the gun cant move much during firing/recoil - you're not suppose to have any space between the gun and and your and - no space = little movement - if you have a flashlight between your hand and the weapon, you have space = somewhere for the gun to travel - these are the laws of physics -

There are many flashlight/firearm possibilities. Each one has
a certain significance.

Other than having a light mounted firearm, the tail end butt cap is a much better option for firearms use in real world conditions.

I've used both the tail end and the side thumbbutton lights in different sizes, on the range, in Sims exercises, and in tactical and patrol clearing situations. Butt end is much more efficient and easier to find/manipulate when you are constantly moving the light, having to go "off light" and then back on, and, god forbid, if you've had to go to a backup light or dropped one and had to pick it back up.

Also, you CAN hold the gun in two hands with the light with the rubber grommet that Surefire puts on some of their hand lights. That is their purpose.
