I'm so happy that Maia has went back to BJJ

I was a fan of Demian Maia because of his amazing, world-class Brazilian Jiu Jitsu skills.  The man is a 5 time world champion in BJJ and without a doubt one of the best practitioners of the art today.

Maia defeated Ed Herman on the 19th of April 2008 with a devastating Triangle Choke/head pounding combo that I will never forget.

Maia then went on to defeat 2 time Middleweight Championship Contender Chael Sonnen on February 21st 2009, again, using his incredible BJJ.

Demian Maia Triangle Chokes Chael Sonnen

After that, Demian faced some road bumps in his career as a UFC Middleweight. Falling victim to current Strikeforce Welterweight champion Nate Marquardt by devastating knockout in just 21 seconds, being humiliated by the Greatest Of All Time Anderson Silva in a lackluster fight, dropping a decision to Mark Munoz and finally his decision loss to Chris Weidman.

I'm ashamed to admit it but watching the Weidman fight is when I finally decided that I was no longer a fan of Demian Maia. In my eyes he had the ability to submit anyone in the world, yet he had fallen in love with striking even though he wasn't very good at it. I was frustrated the few times I watched Maia put on a sloppy kickboxing performance and the Weidman fight was the last straw.

I couldn't believe it. One of my favourite fighters had become a sloppy kickboxer and an unsuccessful brawler.

However, I am happy to report that Maia's move to the Welterweight division has relit the fire that was gone in his last few outings. His Welterweight debut against the Stungun - Dong Hyun Kim - was the moment I became a Demian Maia fan again. The fight had a rather disappointing ending; Kim suffered a rib injury and couldn't continue, but Maia's performance and intentions were exactly what I was looking for.

He instantly looked for the takedown. Transitioned into full mount and went for some ground and pound, you could tell if the fight hadn't been stopped that it was only a matter of time before Maia latched on one of his trademark submission holds.

Then, on October 13th 2012, Demian Maia faced off with Rick Story in his homeland of Brazil. I have to say I was pretty worried for this fight. I am aware that Story is a strong wrestler and I had a feeling that Maia might not even look to take the fight to the ground and just initiate a kickboxing match with Rick. I was delighted when watching that fight. Again, Maia instantly looks for the takedown, passes all of Rick Story's defences and latches on to his throat and squeezes, squeezes hard.

In fact, squeezes so hard that blood shoots out of Story's nostrils forcing him to tap. This submission was truly visceral and technical at the same time.

I'm glad to report that I am well and truly a Demian Maia fan again. His BJJ was what made me a fan of his originally, when he abandoned it for a while I was worried but now that he is back to his roots I couldn't be happier.

I cannot wait for Maia's next fight. No matter who he is facing, I have Maia by sub :)

Hell yea, Good stuff Phone Post

It is indeed my friend!

Maia can do big things at Welterweight if he focuses on his BJJ, which is what it looks like he is doing.

WAR MAIA!

BJJ guys need to believe in their BJJ, and cross train for the sole purpose to avoid strikes and get the fight to the ground.

The worst thing is watching guys like Aoki try to be muay thai fighters and get KTFO in the process. Phone Post

Maia sent a message to 170 in his first 2 fights there. He is back. Phone Post

Maia owns Team Quest haha Phone Post

Couldn't agree more.

When Maia made his transformation into a sloppy kickboxer/brawler I was worried that this was a trend that was going to affect a lot of BJJ players. Fortunately, I was wrong and Maia's love for striking was only a "phase" in his career that is hopefully far behind him now.

Maia is great for the sport of MMA. He is so technical and skillful on the ground that it keeps the Hardcore fans (UG'ers) happy but he is also so talented that whenever the fight hits the mat it is very exciting to watch. A lot of casual fans dislike the ground game because to them it's "boring" but Maia is consistently exciting. Always going for subs, always trying to advance position, always looking for a way to finish.

He is a joy to watch when he uses his Jui Jitsu. Phone Post

Maia vs Fitch would be a great fight. It would be one of the best ground wars seen in recent memory.

I like the prospect of Maia vs Diaz as well.

I just want to see Maia submit some people lol :) Phone Post

Fucking agreed OP. I'm going to VTFU from my damn phone in drunken agreement to be precise. Phone Post

Christ, that was a pain in the ass...

he was forced to focus less on bjj... i think people at 185 just began defending it.  if all you focus on is defending submissions it's very hard for even the best to submit someone with good defense.  Maia grappled the entire fight with Kendal grove and couldnt submit him.  Jacarare did the same with joey villasenor and couldnt submit him.

What happened at 170 is people forgot about his BJJ...   now they are gonna go back to focusing on that and his next fight will likely begin the same trend that happened at 185.

Now the difference is that he seems to be stronger at 170 so that will play a factor... but for the most part i bet his submission wins at 170 will begin to go down.  he'll get frustrated like before and focus more on his stand up and round and round we go.

^ You have to agree though that during the Weidman fight it was rather obvious that Maia had fallen in love with striking and that his primary intention was not to submit Chris.

He was trying to display that he was more than just a world class grappler, he was trying to show the world that Demian Maia can strike. Unfortunately, he wasn't great at it. His striking did improve leaps and bounds over the years but it was never as good as a natural strikers. I mean, look at some of the gifs from the first round of the Weidman fight. I think it's the second gif, what the hell is that he does with his arm at the end of the exchange?

With the move down to 170 I think for the first time in Maia's UFC career he is the bigger, stronger guy. This will help with BJJ talent shine through. I expect Maia to rack up a lot more submission victories before his time is up. Phone Post

Maia vs Kos would be great! I think it might look like the Story fight to be honest. Maia's takedown ability at 170 looks fantastic.

Diego is moving back down to 155 if I remember correctly. Phone Post
