This new trend of guys "Running" or Resetting" or what ever you want call it isn't about not fighting.
Its all about space and how your style of inflicting damage on another person works within space.
Gus, Conor, Overeem these are the 3 guys talked about most when it comes to this new trend of "running". Which is funny because the idea of "running" conjures this person getting away from the fight, But all three of these guys are known for finishing a lot of their fights, often in extremely brutal and violent ways. And that doesn't line up with the idea of running away does it?
Conor I don't even need to talk about we all know what he is capable of and how many of his victories are brutal finishes
Overeem is never never never looking for the decision. He knocks people out almost every time he wins.
Gus has great finishes over very very tough guys and has earned the name mauler for a reason.
My point is if these guys are running and they also destroy their opponents then whats actually going on here?
I think I know. Its the cage.
None of these guys have a short phonebooth rockem sockem style, they are counter fighters who do their best work when they have plenty of space to work inside. The octagon is set up so that if you know how you can trap your enemy in a corner and in the case of these guys rob them of some of their most effective tools. So they run away from the cage.
They aren't running from their enemy they are running from the wall thats trapping them.
We don't call fighters pussies for stuffing takedowns and we shouldn't call them pussies for getting the fuck out of cage slugger range.
In a street fight with infinite space these guys have no reason to run because they can't get trapped. In these scenarios they would stay directly infront of their enemy at all times in their preffered range and pick them apart and destroy them using footwork and spacial manipulation without ever turning and running.
The cage is what they are running from not their opponent.
Sorry for the spelling in advance
