You may be correct when it comes to how they look, but in terms of their behaviour IIRC the inspiration for the aliens was the cordiceps fungus in the rainforest which depends on ants for it’s life cycle.

The spores are ingested by the ant, and slowly develop inside the host. At a certain point the fungus alters the ant’s brain, causing it to break away from the colony and climb up a tree. Once up on a branch, the ant grips on tightly, and dies. A while later the stem of the fungus breaks through the ant’s head, grows upwards and then bursts, spreading out thousands of new spores onto the rainforest floor below, ready to be ingested by more ants.

The Last of Us 1 and 2 (greatest games of all time) was also inspired and based off of this.
