Interesting article re: protein and weight loss

Anyone see this? http://www.huffingtonpost.com/kathy-freston/a-high-protein-diet-wont_b_492203.html

Thoughts?

-Shaz!

Read the article critically. It talks about 'high protein diets' then excoriates saturated fat.

The key to dieting is a transitional approach.

Many of those 'opposed' to 'Atkins' type diets call them 'High protein'. They're not typically run that way. It's fairly difficult to eat above 150g / lb of protein per day, while keeping calories between 1500-2000/day, especially if you have a bit of appetite suppression going on.

So the article:

1. Mischaracterizes the 'low carb diet' as 'high protein' - it's not, typically.

2. Substitutes 'fat' as the culprit

3. Makes claims about protein causing osteoporosis (low carb diet fans do know it's important to supplement calcium and D3)

4. Talks about the dangers of red meat - not all protein is red meat.

5. Claims vegetarianism isn't compatible with higher protein (it's not - just eat PP, eggs, cheese, and other types of protein if you are low).

6. Doesn't talk at all about diet tracking

7. I seriously doubt if the author has ever tried any of these diets. They're just babbling to get an article published.

8. There are no references cited from peer-reviewed lit. So, it's just this doctor's opinion

9. They don't teach nutrition in Medical school, and the stuff they do teach is 30 years out of date.

10. Read the comments. Most studies show lower carb diets are more effective than Ornish diet (cite provided)

11. Nobody has published any definitive work on how to keep the weight off once you diet it off. There are two key items people don't mention, one is diet tracking and how to track.
