Interim Champ... would you be happy about it?

There's something about the word INTERIM that seems to automatically translate to "NOT THE REAL" whenever I see it.

I would rather have just been declared the number one contender instead of being handed a temporary championship.

Any thoughts about having the aluminum strap?

It is the same belt look and feel but to be the champ you have to beat the champ. Some might even say you have to win the belt and then defend the belt.

I am certain all an Interim Champ wants to do is unify the belt.

Interim title holders still get the key to the champions' bathroom...don't they, Shane?

Personal porta potty's, Champs have real bathrooms and real belts.

I would assume the interim strap would still bring in some sweet sponsor money. It's not like the word "INTERIM" is printed on the belt when you take pictures with it wearing all of your sponsors gear.

I'd be happy about it.

Fuck, it at least guarantees you a date with the champ, unless the champ is really out for an extended period.

it means zuffa can't just swap away your right to a title fight etc. Look what has happened to the welterweight cards in the past 6 months...I'd say the interim belt promise to a chance go fight the champ is something to be happy about.

The word INTERIM doesn't have to be printed on the belt... it's printed everywhere you see the INTERIM champ with the belt and it's "printed" in his brain.

If a kid asks you what does INTERIM mean? You would have to say it means "NOT THE REAL..." and the kids would say "Oh..." and not care much...

I mean still it's good to even hover around the top based on how many people are MMA fighters but I think it's kind of insulting in a way. There's no way I would run around being proud of that belt, lol.

It's like the old TV Champ belt in fake wrestling. You had a World champ, a TV Champ, International Champ, National Champ, City Champ, Block Champ, Street Champ, Living room Champ...

I guess Dana is going to "make up" some more championships soon. What you do is you strip GSP and give his belt to Condit and when GSP heals, he fights whomever has the belt at the time to try to win it back.

LMFAO, thanks for the insider info.

Means nothing to me. It's not the real belt. Phone Post

Exactly.

... why even have an interim champ.

... why let somebody that is injured keep the championship past 6 months. If you don't defend in 6 months - you get stripped. Tournament ensues and then a new champ is crowned.

Dana is more about venues and attendance (money) than trying to tweak the sport to make it as "sensible" as possible.

All I hear from him is "GSP is a ratings monster!"

... same with Lesnar, sure it's about ticket sales but other guys are training hard and fighting hard... and some guy sits in the crowd in a suit forever and he's the champ. He's soaking up that endorsement money until he feels "well enough" to fight. Other guys can't rack up the "championship" endorsement money... because they have to wait until the champ is 100%.

BS.

Don't really see the harm in it. Good way to set champ v champ hype next fight. Just see it as a no 1 contender title. Think it would be harsh to just strip a champ of a title that they spent there whole life trying to achieve. Lot of blood, sweat and years go in, injurys are going to happen. If its a semi short term injury then least interim champ moves division around, all of a sudden champ out for a long time you have top contender with the strap. Phone Post

well its a real ufc belt. most ufc fighters will never have 1. its somethng positive.

It's just another plateau. Most fighters will not become the champion, although all strive to. Most fighters will not become the interim champion either.

It's one hell of an accomplishment, i'd say.

If I had it I would still be thinking I'm 2nd best so no I wouldn't like it. Wouldn't hate is either of course. Phone Post

Not to be a buzzkill, but Dana made up ALL the belts.  They can strip, add, modify, or combine at will.  And not to disagree with Shane, but the belt Brock wore was just as much the creation of White's imagination and marketing as the one on your wall.  I love the modesty, but you were the damn Interim Champ, and beat a two time 'real' champ to do it.
