Total stock market index funds, or S&P 500 index funds. Over the long term you'll do better than focusing on specific markets.

Also, read The Bogleheads Guide to Investing. It's a good book that explains things clearly, and is a legit investment philosophy. Unlike other books it's not some crazy get rich quick plan. I can't recommend it enough as a place to start Phone Post 3.0

Index ETFs are the way to go for an investor starting out. Get a Large Cap, Small Cap, and maybe an International fund if you want to be diversified.

The book I mentioned clearly explains it all. It explains the whole theory that people are telling you here about low cost index funds. It explains it clearly and helps you develop a plan on how to start and how to continue. Why settle for some random posts on a message board when you could read a book that explains it clearly? Check your library, they might have it.

You can also get good info from their website and wiki at www.bogleheads.org but I feel the book is significantly easier to read and understand than their wiki Phone Post 3.0
