He was the favorite in the tournament and wouldn't go against a girl who was 20-13 going into the tournament
"I have a tremendous amount of respect for Cassy and Megan and their accomplishments. However, wrestling is a combat sport and it can get violent at times," wrote Northrup. "As a matter of conscience and my faith I do not believe that it is appropriate for a boy to engage a girl in this manner. It is unfortunate that I have been placed in a situation not seen in most other high school sports in Iowa."
I agree with this.
No win situation for the boy.
My son wrestles, and his best friend does too, as does the best friend's sister, who won State last year.
She actually commented that when she beats all the guys, she feels bad because even though it feels amazing to keep winning, she knows they are in a NO WIN situation.
BillyRayChubbs -This. Though I can't think of a good solution as there are so few girls in the sport it is unrealistic to make a female division. I don't believe you should deny the girls a chance to compete, either.

Title 9.
Thanks for nothing.
man up and wrestle the girl. I've never had any issues grappling with girls. Hell, I've played football and basketball against women and had no problem going 100% or laying them out
I wrestled two girls throughout my wrestling career. Never had any problems. Just another match.
A girl in our gym beat a guy in a jiu-jitsu tourney last year who had 20 or so pounds on her, and it was probably a defining moment of absolute humiliation in his life. We all agreed that it's just not something a guy should have forced on him in a competitive environment. There's no telling if the guy went easy on her and realized his mistake too late or what.
Slippery slope. What if he were asked to fight a toddler in a Karate match?

But, in a way, aren't his feelings of humiliation contrary to everything BJJ supposedly preaches? Intelligence and technique over size and strength?
The butt drag would be my go to move.

Yes, but things get complicated when you factor in differences in chromosomes. You can be absolutely humble and have a problem pulling the trigger against someone of the opposite sex, and your training partners aren't going to let it go when you lose.
So silly. Man up and wrestle/grapple. If you lose then you obviously aren't where you thought you were skill-wise. Especially if you have 20 lbs on the girl to boot. Only a no win situation if you have an ego really. Plus this kid mentions his faith which is another can of worms/debating point Id reckon.
My buddy wrestled this girl in HS. He lost to her cause he froze up. He was very very uncomfortable. We gave him HELL afterwards. He got so upset he vowed it would never EVER happen again. They met again later in the season in a tourney. He FUCKED her up. Butt dragged her and everything. Crossfaced the shit out of her. He absolutely schooled her. Won by tech fall in the 2nd period. A lot of people in the stands were yelling shit and were very upset. All of us treated him like he was the MVP of the superbowl. Came running to us next to the mat, jumped in our arms. He was like fuck yeah! It was a no win situation for him. Look like a pussy or look like am asshole. Take your pick I guess.

One of my nephews is on the high school wrestling team and every time a girl shows up on the opposite team, you see all the boys get nervous. When I asked him about it, he said they are very conscious of where their hands end up (not to mention the effect it will have on their bodies... teenagers going thru puberty) and as a result NONE of them want to wrestle the girls. He also said losing to a girl gets you ragged on by the rest of the team. As an adult we accept the above things as part of the sport, as a teen, I can see how its intimidating.
On a different note, there have been a few high schools in the area that have had to disband their mens teams due to a new rule in the school district that says if a school wont supply a female team, then the men's team cannot exist either. Some schools havent had enough females sign up and as a result the mens team was disbanded. This specific instance of equality bullshit is getting ridiculous.

LOL 20 lbs on her? High School wrestling weights are only like 3 lbs apart. The women actually look bigger than the men at the same weight because the female is packing more fat.
People need to look at this from a teen going thru high school AND puberty's point of view. That teen point of view isnt going to be politically correct or "what is right". It's easy to sit here and say Man up, deal with it, etc. when we know what we know now. Being a teen is alot harder than being an adult when it comes to these situations.
wtf are women doing competing against men in any combat sport? lol
that young boy should have taken the match and defeat her.
What's funny is every chick I know that has heard about this story is going on that he's scared of her and thinks she could beat him.
LOL, sure.
Quite honestly, I think guys that wrestle chicks should make it a point to retire them from wrestling with guys.
He's home-schooled and mentioned "faith" in his reasoning, so my guess is that his parents strongly leaned on him to not wrestle.
I wrestled a girl in a tourney once and lost. I caught more shit for showing up to the match butt naked than losing though.
PatK -I agree with this.

Make it such a humiliating experience for the girl that other girls dont dare compete with you!
If the guy looks like an asshole, oh well.
