Brian's post has made me determined to attend more of my bjj school's wrestling classes.
yes
Zapruder - I just want to see ONE reswitch.
griffin vs edgar there were a few reswitches, but generally speaking I agree that they should be done more
The same is true for Judo. A pure judo class ran by a judo competitor is a lot like a wrestling class with a good warm up, grip drills, etc. I had to start using my Judo instructor in my BJJ classes otherwise people just won't do it.
Brian McLaughlin - FRAT warning
Most BJJ/MMA guys didn't like learning the sport of wrestling. They were very closed minded and only wanted to be "shown a few takedowns".
The conventional wisdom in the past 10 years was that all you needed was above average BJJ (or other form of ground) and Muay Thai (or some other striking) to be succesful. That was the best combo, since nobody was good in more than 2 dimensions.
I think we're getting to the point in MMA though, where you do need to be an above average fighter in all 3 Dimensions or phases. Which would mean really working on Wrestling/Judo.
GSP = blackbelt BJJ + training with Canadian Olympic Wrestlers + Striking
Lyoto = blackbelt BJJ + training wrestling with RAW team and Inoki Dojo + Shotokan Karate
I think if you look at how Lesnar, Gray Manyard, etc are shutting people's BJJ and striking game down it should really be a wake up call. Lesnar, Maynard, etc are taking the time to learn the BJJ/Catch Wreslting/Sub game and the Striking game but I still don't see people clamoring to learn wrestling.
I do think in the future the demand for D1 wrestling teachers and post college competition may increase because of this.
Wrestling is demoralizing when you're losing and the problem keeping guys who are 23 or so who are learning mma is that they are more interested in learning things that can be easily seen as applicable for fighting.
A triangle choke or flying knee is always going to be more marketable to tattoo filled Vanderlei wanna-bes. Meanwhile, they get furious when Joe Wrestler comes into their gym and picks up enough bjj in a month to completely destroy them.
Even Forrest mentions always finding a way to avoid wrestling practice early in his career because he sucked at it. In bjj, you're working with guys that are at all levels and it's expected that the best guys will use rolling sessions with scrubs as a chance to teach them while working on their weaker positions.
Most guys that are in the wrestling classes you'll see have been doing it for years and have no interest in taking it easy when it's time for live wrestling. That's not how wrestlers are taught. You suck? Get better by getting destroyed every day or quit.
ttt
thanks for the ttt's i didnt see it had gotten the responses. and i can understand why wrestling gyms/classes arent more prevalent. when i look back at my wrestling days its the most fun i'd never want to have again. if i had a shitty team i dont know if i would have stuck with it.
but it just seems like this is something you learn in middle/high shool and the fact there are professional fighters who dont at least attempt to do it confuses me.
and its not a switchgif but something a lil more embarrassing for any wrestler

Well if Forrest had taken Wrestling more seriously and given it a better attitude early maybe he would've actually gone for some takedowns against Anderson Silva instead of being silly and deciding to stand and trade and then runaway.
Zapruder -
What conditioning is needed to teach wrestling technique?
sans lubricant -
You don't have to run every class like a D-1 training session
what kind of fucking wrestling training would it be if it does not include conditioning
wrestling is one of the most cardio-intensive sports. and you would never attract business, BJJ guys who are trying to improve their game don't even like to work on wrestling because its so tiring.
whatever casual interest is there in fuckin wrestling (none) would get chased off by the intensity of the work.

depends on what they are there for, if its sold as technique heavy they would know to seek cardio elsewhere. but any live drill is cardio intensive anyway.
Haulport -subwrassler - I think there is a good market for a reputable wrestler with coaching and/or winning comp. credentials to start teaching at different levels.this is so true and yet no one seems to pick this up. it is odd.....
There are a lot of little muy thai schools and small bjj schools. I'll bet in a lot of cities if someone opened a spot for just wrestling they would do just as well.
I disagree, although there are exceptions. A huge chunk of your customers will still have access to free wrestling either in highschool or college (club wrestling), I think it would be very difficult to compete with that...

as a couple of guys here already mentioned, a high school or college level wrestling class is not where most people want to learn wrestling. This seems to be because the guys who have been wrestling for years will not take it easy on you and/or do any non-cardio technique training.
ok ok ok!!!but can someone post a gif or video of the actual re-switch???
