Is Jones the first elite athlete to enter MMA?

Because he is wrecking the entire LHW division with ease.  Randy Couture, who is about to get another title shot, barely beat Vera by humping him against the fence for three rounds.  Jones took Vera down easily twice and then smashed him with one elbow.

frate train?

He's not the first elite athlete, but he's one of the first to be that athletic and that big.....Most true elite athletes his size take their abilities elsewhere.

Come the fuck on. These are elite, legit heavies:

Couture
Coleman
Fedor
Kerr

In lighter weights, Van Arsdale, Randleman and Kid are also pretty legit. Crocop counts too, though he was never a very good boxer (due to lack of chin) but has all the attributes other than that.

Haven't we had this conversation before??? I think every few months I see this thread just with a different fighter's name.

I wasn't intending to argue. I was just saying it seems like we hear everyone being called elite athletes, then some UGers come say all the elite athletes go to the NFL, and round we go.

Totally depends on your definition of "elite athlete". Everyone you mentioned except Fedor and Kid are what I would consider elite wrestlers, first and foremost. Yes, they are all amazing athletes and great fighters. But when I think elite athlete, I think of someone who could have gone pro or olympic at many different sports, had they trained it from a young age...Randy, Coleman, Van Arsdale etc dont fall into that category in my book.....Maybe I'm wrong, and Jones is just a great wrestler whos now learning MMA, but I think he's more than that. Didn't they say his brother is going to the NFL? Leads me to believe that in addition to his size and wrestling, Jones is genetically elite.....And you cant argue with me that the cream of the athletic crop (especially at the bigger sizes) overwhelmingly do not choose MMA as their sport. They go where the money/scholarships are. For now....

Link to your thread title mentioning anything about elite athletes of 22 years old? No i think it was just about elite athletes. Read your own thread before you post on it!

"Didn't they say his brother is going to the NFL? "

His older brother Arthur (he was the big guy in his corner) was a highly rated DT prospect before wrecking his knees. He's still in the NFL's cross-hairs, but he's not an early-round pick like he could have been.

His younger brother, Chandler, is a sophomore DE for Syracuse as well and is looking like a serious candidate for the NFL. 6'5", 265 and crazy speed.

that right there is pure athleticism
