Is MMA best LEARNED as a whole or in parts?

We revisit this question every few years but only recently have we started to see kids coming up who have trained MMA from scratch. Should everything be taught in an MMA context or in three different parts and then combined. Perhaps it's best to learn striking in a purely MMA context while joining a wrestling team and eventually integrate bjj. Would the fighters be better if there was a scholastic program or a strong amateur avenue like the golden gloves? Maybe it all depends on the individual. I keep changing my mind!
