I found this old clip of Cung Le fighting a sanda champ. This clip really shows off how good Cung's wrestling skills. His Chinese opponent is actually ethnic mongolian who is know for his wrestling in the King of Sanda competition. Cung just manhandles him in the clinch it's amazing.
Anyway I'm getting ready for a match early next year. I'm originally from a kungfu/ sanshou background now into muay thai. In the clip around the 58sec mark, Cung Le does this throw from the underhooks position. Would this throw be legal in muay thai? I'm good with throws & takedowns, tend to be shorter than most of my opponents and hence get the underhooks alot. I was hoping to maybe use this as one of my staple techniques.
I know in muay thai you're not allowed to use your hip to throw, hence no hip throws. And I think you can't use any obvious wrestling throws, hence no supplex and the like. What I was hoping is this throw is one of those throws that blurs the line and is allowable.
What do you guys think?
*Edited because my brain tend to think faster than my fingers.
What is amazing about this clip, if you know San Shou/San Da judging, is that the Chinese referee didn't award a SINGLE PONT to Cung for ANY of those throws. This event, run by the Chinese, featuring Chinese, referee'ed by Chinese and judged by Chinese was one of the most corrupt EVER! Al Lorioux of Boston KO'ed him opponent and they gave the Chinese guy a rest period to start again!!!!!!
All my favourite throws are illegal in muay thai! Oh well can't blame a guy for trying. Thanks for the input guys.
I can't believe that the Chinese can be so blatantly corrupt! LOL. Please tell me that Cung still won that match? I like how his opponent resorted to backing away into the corners and holding onto the ropes to prevent being thrown. And the ref thinks it's ok! :)
hey! don't feel bad, we got "called" on a perfectly legal throw (spin with head, threw them to canvas) because we are "san da people" - "hey, no throws, this is Moo-E Thai" the not so educated ref said (groan)
well, I had a student who knee'd the living tar out of a guy for three rounds, the other guy threw neither knees nor kicks, and WE lost a decision, the judge said, I quote "well, this guy is throwing a lot of punches and all the other guy is doing is kicking him and tying him up and kneeiing him, so how does he think he won"
When it comes to the throws, I'm a really strict guy, you fight the rules you agree to! We do Thai, we ONLY do legal Thai techniqus, so when we get pestered by an incompetent ref over a perfectly legal throw I get sort of pizzed
"well, this guy is throwing a lot of punches and all the other guy is doing is kicking him and tying him up and kneeing him, so how does he think he won"
I had a ref start the count on a knock down after my guy was swept with a kick to the lower leg and jumped right back up. That one pissed me off a little bit to say the least.
Thanks for the link lkfmdc. But now I have more questions.
In the thread, a post which lists the illegal throw techniques by Tony Myers says
l) A boxer leg sweeps their opponent using the calf or inside of their foot
Is this referring to a throw like judo's osotogari? But I remember distintively in Malaipet's clinch dvd he shows a very osotogari like technique except that the sweeping leg doesn't come off the ground which I assumed made it legal in muay thai?
