GregNoActionJackson - Not at all. Strength has a small role to play in wrestling. Technique, conditioning and leverage are more important in wrestling than strength. I can recall countless matches where you see a muscle head take on a skinny lanky kid and get made a fool once the lanky kid throws legs in.Also balance, timing, anticipation and body awareness.
Yeah. That comment about hearing Bubba J was #1 in the world was . . . strange?
It's true that wrestling is mostly technique. But, it takes speed, strength, balance, and explosiveness to finish takedowns.
I've been wrestling/grappling since I was 3. When I first started training MMA. I was taking down guys 20-30lbs heavier than me. Before they could sprawl and/or whizzer me, they were already on their backs. When they tried to take me down, they were slow and had no power in their attempt.
It does a shitload of strength to be a wrestler. Some wrestlers may not notice but their core is strong as fuck when put to the test against others.
Leverage (technique) is a force (strength) multiplier.

succint
I'm strong as fuck and get handled by wrestlers sometimes. If I hadn't done Judo previously it would be even worse.
I read a thing that said Lesnar had awful wrestling technique but won a national championship because he was strong as an ox.
I was never one to believe that wrestling was all about strength but what really nailed this home for me was how Ben Askren does in his fights. He gets takedowns that he has no business getting and it has nothing to do with his strength. Might not be the most likeable guy but his skill is unreal. Wish I had more exposure to high level wrestling here in Canada.

Those are all huge factors as well
Only to uneducated, ignorant noobs. Not meant in an offensive way. It's just accurate and the truth.
UGCTT_Messiah - Strength applied through technique.This!
There both important. No one wins the mundials without lots of strength. Wrestling is just more explosive and more aggressive
Technique, conditioning, speed, and a Die hard attitude makes a great wrestler! > over pure strength.
Those attributes alway beat pure strength. When u add strength it becomes the X factor sometimes! Because if have all you are usually world class. Jordan Burroughs and Alexander Karelin have all the above and are crazy great in freestyle and Greco! I never seen nobody dominate like they have with all 5 attributes above.
Good vs Great.
4/5. 5/5

I cant speak about wrestling in general but at the middle school levels I met some girls who were very technical and they smoked the boys in elementary but when puberty kicked in the girls got beat, it got even worse when they got to HS.
