Sonnen got rocked earlier by that sneaky lunging straight that Forrest got caught with! Watch it more closely, after Silva lands that unseemly strong strike, Sonnen loses the earth underneath his feet. It was exactly the reason why I think he just dropped after the spinning elbow and looked lost; he was still rocked!
It was the pressure from his pre-fight trask talk!- goku
he realized all the smack he talked and it was time to pay up. he wanted out he knew anderson was enraged so sonnen looked for his first opportunity to quite. once he couldnt get anderson back down he was done mentally
it did look like he wanted out but dunno...Chael may be a lot of things but mentally weak is definitely not one of them!
Nuh-uh OP! Chael was so afraid that he broke his own nose and fell down as an excuse to get out of the cage. FACT!

I totally agree. Anderson had his hands down and Chael came charging. That little blow clearly dazed him and started it.

I have no idea if he is or isn't, but there was an interview with Matt Lindland (former coach) a little after the first Silva fight in which he claimed that Chael just wasn't mentally tough, nor a tough guy when pushed. I'll try to dig up the article.

There are already at least two other threads dedicated to this very topic
Silva was the nail in the first fight and Sonnen was the Hammer. Sonnen could never take the punsihment Silva took in the first fight and it's easy when you are the one doing the Hammering.
in conclusion,Sonnnen is very good in administering the Hammer but sucks at being the nail,Silva can do both very well

Its also easy to do the hammering against an injured opponent and when your TRTing out of your mind.
This time, Chael gets Andy on the mat, even gets mount but is no where near able to GNP away the same way he did the first time.
It was clear to me, that Andy's movement off his back was night/day from the first fight, he was able to tie up Sonnen much much better.
And then Chael could not even get a td by R2 this time (just like the Hendo fight).
Even in the first fight, Andy did more with 1 strike off his back then the record breaking amount Chael had from on top.
MedMan007 -Giorgos - it did look like he wanted out but dunno...Chael may be a lot of things but mentally weak is definitely not one of them!

If that's the case, Matt knows better...
Anderson kept his hands down and chael wanted to treat him like an amateur like he said he would but he forgot Anderson stays poised
it was chaels heart thatgave out he didnt want to fight anymore
CHAEL : NO TAKEDOWN, NO FIGHT!
Giorgos - it did look like he wanted out but dunno...Chael may be a lot of things but mentally weak is definitely not one of them!
Wrong. Chael breaks. It's why he has been subbed so many times. Don't confuse wrestling talent with being mentally strong. One is a skillset that can be learned, the other is something Chael will never have.

yeah, it is very possible that's the case. I mean, I guess I just take for granted that a guy with that kind of resilience ('cause it takes a lot of it to reach that level of wrestling) wouldn't be mentally weak. Evidence does point to the contrary though; that last punch doesn't seem to land very heavy, still he goes down like a sack of potatoes. However, it still has to be said that this started by a short punch that only Silva is cable of! He delivers amazing power from a short distance!
Why would you want to call yourself the CHAMPION if all you want to do is wrestle people down an slap them on the sides with soft punches.
1st round made Ben Askren proud.
yep totally agree with OP's observation. when silva hit that moonwalk and sonnen followed he got popped in the face with that anchor punch.

Yep. I kept reading everyone say how the spinning back fist was Chael's mistake and had he not done that the fight would have been different. NOPE. Giorgos gives a perfect analysis.
Chael was rocked/dazed and trying to regain composure. Spinning back fist was just desperation, even if he hadn't attempted it. The fact that Chael wasn't able to get the takedown, and then the fact that Silva hit him and dazed him, he was heading towards a loss.
(Im a Sonnen fan BTW).
Yeah I agree, that punch was the beginning of the end. Chael walked right into it, and lost some pep in his step afterwards.
