At today's Amazon Challenge it was reportedly announced on National TV that Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza has signed on with the UFC and will compete in the UFC's middleweight division; this from multiple sources. Though there has been no official word from the UFC as of yet.
Jacare (5-1) has a fierce, aggressive ground game and is considered one of the top grappler's in the world. He actually drew against Randy Couture in an exhibition grappling match last year despite giving up more than 50 pounds to the UFC heavyweight champion. Couture even admitted afterwards that he spent most of the night defending against Jacare rather than being the aggressor.
If this turns out to be official as we suspect, there will be a new contender for the UFC middleweight title in the near future.
"Chances of Jacare pulling guard and ending their night - Pretty damn good"
he doesnt need to pull guard his takedowns are solid.
"1 demensional fighters dont go very far in todays mma so i hope hes been working on his standup"
he hasnt competed in any grappling or bjj events in over a year and has only been working on MMA. im sure hell do well. his style is perfect for mma as long as he gets good at clinching without getting hit too much.
he is not one dimensional in the respect that he is a bjj guy that can't get the fight to the ground. His takedowns are very good, his striking is improving, his bjj stands head and shoulders above most mma fighters and to compound his bjj on the ground, as someone else mentioned on another thread, he gnp's like a mad man.
Taking all of those factors into account I would not consider him a 1 trick pony and dangerous for anyone right now and possibly a future contender.
