But why? Anybody know?
No it was one of the last fights of the men. The opponent was from some African country.
I believe the dude from Zambia or wherever was the one DQed, not the Japanese player. I don't know the reason, they just said safety on my screen.
Really. Hmmm. It was kinda weird wasn't it. Didn't seem to bad.
The Japanese player is going right now, so it was the african guy who was DQed.
Thanks. But why, I ask. Cause he went low or?
Believe it was hansoko maki (sp) for grabbing below the belt without initiation of a throw. Automatic dq.
Aha. Yeah the judo rules are not known to me. What a strange rule! What does that have to do with safety, as the text on the screen said.

Same sort of rule as in Greco-Roman wrestling, except in judo its an automatic disqualification, which is just wrong. Its a new rule the IJF (judo's governing body) put in about four years ago - and most judo people agree its stupid (even those who like it say the disqualification is just wrong, it should be a shido like any other penalty).
No idea why they call it safety.
I'll tell you what it has to do with safety... It keeps judokas safe from being beaten consistently by wrestler/judokas who often shoot doubles and singles on them and land them flat on their backs. Best solution international Judo could come up with is changing the rules to remove leg attacks to destabilize opponents.
You can only attack the legs after the opponent is already off balance. But then it's really a toss up/judgement call on whether the opponent's balance has already been broken. If it hasn't obviously been broken, there is a good chance you will be DQ'ed.
I think it's an extremely weak rule change that is only hurting Judo.
Well put Chris. I agree.
95% of the Judo community is firmly against this rule.
It may be repealed after this Olympic games.
How bout Greco Judo and Freestyle Judo?
;)
It seems all these sports are afraid of each other. Silly really, but I guess there's a lot of money involved.
Judo really needs to update its ruleset.
Really enjoying watching and learning the rules while the olympics is on.
Olympics thus far have been a giant joke

It would be so much more awesome if they had "Grappling" as a sport and did away with this silly shit. Go ADCC rules.
Judo just gets more and more confusing

I'm actually hoping for a rule change that would not allow Americans to talk about judo publicly. ... I suppose is not about you guys being stupid, but you just do not understand world judo at all and in particular it's relation to different wrestling styles.
