Jiu-Jitsu used to be awesome

Im sitting here watching all these old Margarida matches and Im coming to the realization, that guys just dont go for it like they used to. Even the "best fights" section of Budo videos can put me to sleep. Back in 2000 you could show your buddies matches from the black belt division at the mundials and there would be enough action that maybe your friend would think it was cool.

Its sad, but I would NEVER show somebody that I thought was interested in BJJ a black belt match from today. Two guys pulling guard at the same time and looking at each other for 9 minutes? Thats my ambien right there.

ummm. marcelo garcia?

roger submitting everyone including absolute?

jacare?

terere?

leozinho?

mendes brothers? j/k on that one.

sorry man there are plenty since 2000 that are good to show. but i hear you.

margarida was a mother fucking gangster on the mat. one of my all time favorites.

Rafa Mendes submitted everyone at ADCC except Cobrinha (and he was very close to finishing him multiple times). He submitted everyone at Mundials in 2010 except Ryan Hall and Cobrinha. He submitted everyone at Euro. Championships.

The hate he gets because he uses 50/50 against Cobrinha is ridiculous.

The only thing more boring to watch than Judo is Jiu Jitsu.

Wrong, the only thing more boring than watching jiu jitsu is watching a jiu jitsu instructional video. it is like digital ambien...

What about a judo documentary?

Abmar, Kayron, Braga Neto, etc. a lot of those matches from the last Worlds was great.

There was so much for judo and fighting for takedowns a decade ago. Margarida's matches were great because the game was more well rounded, standing, ground, passing, guard.

Now the best guys have great guards and not much for takedowns, except Roger who fights for top position mostly.

I'd like to see matches where guard pulling is illegal and everyone has to fight for the takedown.

Dude there are so many exciting competitors right now, if you don't enjoy matches were the two guys are so even that nothing happens(for example Langhi vs Celso at this years worlds) that's fine, but there are so many exciting fighters and fights that this thread is ridiculous.

There are like a dozen matches from this years worlds dvd that you could show guys(I'll even list a bunch of them for you):

Both Cavaca vs Cyborg Matches
Kron vs Sergio Moraes
Kayron vs Bill Cooper
Caio Terra vs Bruno Malfacine
Cavaca vs Pe De Pano
Cyborg vs Braga Neto

nope, not even close. i thought the videos were really well done and an interesting discussion on the japanese culture around their judo compared with the west.

I would like to see that as well. But if I'm not mistaken the rules in bjj(IBJJF) are there to reflect what the head guys think are important in bjj. The main idea is that bjj is for self-defense as far as the head guys are concerned. Now add in that takedowns are not only given value but pulling guard is penalized shows that BJJ is valuing the offensive and not the defensive aspects. I think that would send the "wrong" message. At least according to them.

Ridgeback -  Personally I think tournaments should all be submission only.  Fighting for advantage or points that lead to nowhere is pointless.

I like this. When you have points awarded to positions you get people position hunting instead of looking for the sub.

10min and sub only would be cool. But if there are no subs then what a draw? Overtime with a point based system and first point wins match maybe.

No time would be cool too but I think to hold a tournament with No time+No points format would take days to finish...potentially.

Ridgeback -  BJJ with the gi was always boring to watch for all but a small group of bjj practitioners.  No-gi is more interesting and there are plenty of interesting no-gi guys.

Not plausible. Takes too long.

Ridgeback - There is a way to make submission only tournaments work.  They already have them.  Make a draw a basis for elimination from the bracket and you will see the action pick up big time.

That would take an insanely long time if it were sub only. Do you propose there is a time limit or no? How would it work?

Maybe give a 15 minute time limit and if there is no submission then both guys are eliminated, that'd be good.

Do they have them at the international level with hundreds of Black Belts competing?

Making them work for a submission for 10 minutes would force them to sacrifice position far too often. The idea of BJJ is to achieve dominant position. The idea of all grappling arts is to achieve dominant position. BJJ just adds a finish at the end.

I love watching Margarida play guard in those older matches

Didn't Rorion organize a submission only tournament back in the day that had funky time limits or something? How'd that work out?

^^^
no one has done it with top level blackbelts competing against each other.

I'm sure they could(and probably have). Nevertheless, I really don't care about points vs. submission only as much as I want to see an end to buttflopping. The sheer number of youtube clips I've seen of both competitors simulataneously buttflopping only to play footsies and look at each other like they're not gay-in-the-faggot-way is disturbing. Like someone else mentioned, the game 10yrs or so ago was far more balanced and we saw some guys like Margarida and Saulo had some really nice judo. That shit was a pleasure to watch because it was exciting and, imo, stayed true to bjj's roots.

There are still a lot of guys with good takedowns(Marcelo, Roger, Claudio Calasans, Cyborg, Xande, Sergio Moraes, Tarsis etc).

I think most peoples real problem is that they don't understand 50/50 and the other leg entanglement positions people play at lower weights(the dude right above me for instance). I don't really play that game, but the truth of the matter is that they're effective(guys score from there all the time) and if you're to lazy to figure out whats going on it's not the competitors fault, it's your own.
