Ask anyone who knows Joe Lauzon, he is a great guy. Ask anyone who knows Joe Lauzon, he is ferocious. Ask anyone who knows Joe Lauzon, he knows MMA.

All three came together at UFC on FOX 16 when JLau beat the daylight out of Takanori Gomi and then walked away, leaving referee Herb Dean to finally stop the fight too many long, awkward seconds later.

Lauzon addressed what happened at the post-fight press conference.

"I think I kinda jumped the gun a little bit," said Lauzon as transcribed by Luke Thomas for MMAFighting.com. "I hit him good a couple of times. When I had his back, I spread him out and I think he tore something in his groin or something because he was fighting pretty hard and then he let out kinda of a squeal. Then he completely went flat. I felt like I had taken the life out of him.

"Hit him a couple of times. I thought he was unconscious. I thought he was out. He looked out. Herb Dean was right there, so I figured he was unconscious. I thought I beat him to him putting hands on me and I walked away. Then he's kinda looking at him and checking him out. I'm like, 'He's not going to stop this.' Then I started to kinda run over and then before I got there he waved me off."

"I thought [Dean] was stopping the fight. really did. He was right on top of me. He didn't put his hands on me, which I guess that's what I should've waited for, but Gomi was clearly unconscious. He's face down. I'm hitting him in the head a couple of times. He's not moving at all.

"There was no doubt in my mind at that moment the fight was over, but then I got up and walked away and then Herb is looking at him. It looked like he was trying to make a decision, so then I started kinda coming back, but I thought it was over. I normally wouldn't stop unless I was 100 percent sure."

They say never meet your heroes. Joe Lauzon didn't just meet one of his heroes, he fought him. And when he won, Joe Lauzon just walked away.

Joe, I thought it looked like a grown man handling a child once you got him town. Sick ground game and the way you kept ahold of the ankle and stopped him from getting away was something else. If Gomi was a fly, you were a Venus fly trap. Thanks for the good performance and glad you made it out virtually unscathed. Phone Post 3.0

Ever since TUF 5, I've wanted to see you and Nate Diaz throw down. Phone Post 3.0

Best Ttt in a long time. Congratulations Joe. Phone Post 3.0

That was a beautiful, brutal, and respectful in such a short time period. Great job and a clear example of why you have so many bonuses and loyal fans. Phone Post 3.0

When I hear "squeal" I think of Ned Beattie.

Thanks for clarifying a really weird looking situation, and thanks for saving a legend like Gomi unnecessary damage. Excellent win! Who's next?

Must have been "tough." Gomi is such a legend. You hear stories about fighters kind of being bummed when they beat a fighter they have watched fight for years.
