Jon Fitch would turn down a fight with Palhares

http://www.mmaoddsbreaker.com/news/jon-fitch-if-asked-rousimar-palhares-would-be-the-first-time-in-my-career-i-turned-down-a-fight/

Recently victorious UFC Fight Night 29 welterweight Rousimar Palhares has been making headlines recently for all the wrong reasons. “Toquinho” was released from Ultimate Fighting Championship following his first round heel hook victory over Mike Pierce this past Wednesday night (Oct. 9, 2013) in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Palhares was the only competitor to win by submission on the card but was denied a $50,000 “Submission of the Night” bonus because he held onto a heel hook well after not only Pierce had tapped but even once the referee intervened.

It was not Palhares’ first offense either, as he had been  suspended previously by the New Jersey State Athletic Commission for holding onto a heel hook against Tomasz Drwal well after the fighter had tapped and he was also most recently coming off a nine-month suspension for having elevated testosterone levels in his  middleweight fight against Hector Lombard in 2012.

Considering the fact that the Brazilian was coming off a rare win heading into his UFC release, he’d seem to be a hot commodity on the free agent market, most notably for promotions like Bellator MMA or World Series of Fighting, but that is not the case.

In an exclusive sneak peak of an upcoming feature interview with top World Series of Fighting welterweight (and former top UFC welterweight) Jon Fitch, the long-time veteran showed zero interest in competing against the dangerous leg lock specialist.

“It was a second offense,” said Fitch. “Holding onto a submission too long, especially with a joint lock like that. You’re talking about ending someone’s career potentially. I think it was the right move (to release him). I personally wouldn’t accept a fight with [Palhares] because of those. One time maybe, but not twice. I would never even compete against him honestly. If he’s got that long of a history of holding onto them too long, his career should probably be done because no one should take a fight with him or a grappling match with him for that matter.”

Palhares’ inability to let go of dangerous leg locks dates back well before his UFC career as well as in non-MMA bouts like his 2011 ADCC grappling contest against David Avellan. When asked what he would do if World Series of Fighting signed “Toquinho” and attempted to promote a fight against Fitch, the American Kickboxing Academy fighter had a simple response:

“It would be the first time in my career that I turned down a fight.”

Guaranteed loss for Fitch plus he would run the risk of serious injury. Can't blame him.

Fitch would probably wreck him in a fight unless he really just doesn't have it anymore. But he knows he's not invincible and nobody wants to risk a major leg injury. Phone Post

No palhares is a level above in the bjj and physically the strongest person he'd every face except maybe Hendricks. Pierce is a better mma wrestler than Fitch Imo. Phone Post

Palhares doesn't have a single top 10 win in his entire career and yet he's a lock to beat fitch?Sure. Phone Post 3.0

Not a Fitch fan but I agree that no one should accept a fight with him. I know I wouldn't. I'd rather fight Anderson Silva. Phone Post 3.0

Pierce didn't even try to take down Palhares. If Fitch wanted to he probably could take him down and stay safe there. His submission defense is also great. I love Palhares but when he fights top guys they avoid his leg lock early and then smash him. Phone Post

Case you've been running rampant for the last week. First Fitch outwrestled Pierce in their fight, and you also said Fitch is the better wrestler than Shields when you were analyzing the Maia fight. Don't drink and post ;)

Shields has never out wrestled Fitch in their bjj matches shields pulls guard Phone Post

I know he did in their fight but that wasn't exactly recent. Pierce is a much better wrestler in mma now than when he started. His fight with Kos proved that to me. Phone Post

While I agree Pierce is a better mma wrestler than Fitch, Fitch is a much better bjj artist than Pierce.

Mike Pierce jiu jitsu is not Alan Belcher level, but Fitch/Belcher's jits is comparable.

Fitch is better at bjj than pierce I'd bet but Belcher had a great technique but a large Size advantage as well. I wouldn't expect Fitch to be able to stop the submission very easily. I think he'd do better but still get tapped. Palhares v maia and palhares v shields is gone forever. Phone Post

Id love to do a palhares article by people will just bash him and I. Phone Post

Pierce beats paul harris 9 times out of 10. Pierce was just trying too hard to be exciting and fought a different game than he's used to. Avoiding getting cut for being "boring" as well as trying to get on main cards put the pressure on him. Phone Post

Huh?

I disagree I have a feeling Paul was going to submit most guys until the top 10. Paul was undeniably one strongest Mws. At welterweight hes the same but stronger in comparison. Phone Post

I guess it's easier to validate these things like that and always have the "better now" card instead of watching the 2 guys actually fight.

And when you were analyzing the Maia fight, I'm pretty sure you thought Maia was going to finish Shields with ease. We can agree Fitch is the better wrestler when grappling(doesn't really have the need to outwrestle in straight up grappling), in MMA Shields is WAY better. (source: Shields' record and Maia MMAth)

I could see him finishing him. I still can in another fight but I expected it to be like the Fitch fight and it nearly was. Jake has great escapes. I underestimated him that's pretty simple. I still think maia is a much better grappler. Phone Post

LOL @ thinking that wins over ranked opponents means shit with this matchup. Fitch's only chance of winning is to win a decision. Do you really think that Fitch can just spend 15 - 25 minutes laying on top of Palhares? The same Fitch who was out wrestled by Penn, manhandled by Maia and tapped by Burkman? Do you even know who Palhares is and what he actually does to other world class grapplers, bro? Palhares is the worst possible matchup for Fitch at 170, with the UFC roster included.

Maybe you'll eventually learn enough about fighting that you'll be able to form an opinion of your own. Fucking rankings. Laughable. Thanks for the vote down also.

Toquinho is an absolute nightmare for guys like Fitch, Askren, etc.
