As long as boxing and mixed martial arts exist together, each side will have it's proponents arguing that their sports is superior to the other. Tyson Fury thinks he's the best heavyweight combat athlete in the world and UFC President Dana White thinks his heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez is.

In an interview for Power 105.1, UFC lightheavyweight champion Jon Jones was asked how he would fair in a bout with boxing legend Floyd Mayweather:

"To be honest with you, if it was all hands, it would probably be a pretty competitive match. But that's not fighting, either. You can't be at the bar and be like, alright, no kicking, no taking me down, don't stretch my shirt out. It's not like that. What I do, I consider it to be the true art of fighting. To do everything.

Fighting Floyd Mayweather wouldn't even be right. Nobody would want to see that. James Toney did it about two years ago. He lost in the first round. Don't mess with an MMA fighter. You don't want to do that. It's a bad look."

However, Larry Brown doesn't think a boxing match between the two would even be competive:

I know that Jones is an awesome MMA fighter and that he has a significant size advantage over the 5-foot-8, 147-pound Mayweather, but let’s be real: Mayweather is one of the best boxers in the planet. If we’re talking strictly boxing, Jones is probably considered below average. Regardless of size, Floyd would win that fight.

And don’t even get me started with how it would go in MMA. As we saw with James Toney, the UFC is no place for a boxer. Not unless you’re also competent as a wrestler and schooled in practices like Jiu-Jitsu.

Don't mess with a MMA fighter, toes will be broken. Phone Post

This is a frivolous argument to make. Unless they ACTUALLY plan to fight each other then stfu.

Its a very similar argument made about motorcycle racing. Just because your good in one class doesn't make you good in a different class. You can talk after you've made the switch because you'll have the experience to talk. Jones is a great MMA fighter, Mayweather a great boxer, but because they both wear gloves doesn't make them the same.

Until then, who gives a shit?

Between an MMA fighter and a boxer:

- In a boxing match, the boxer wins easily.

- Everywhere else (MMA cage, kickboxing ring, street fight, bar brawl, etc.), the boxer gets murdered.

Simple as that.

Lmao @ Mayweather would beat Jones regardless of size lol smh Phone Post

jon jones was being really humble when he said a boxing match would be competitive. he has 8 inches of height and 70-80lbs on mayweather. mayweather is good but we are talking about an elite athlete who is damn near twice floyds size, jones would crush mayweather in mma ofcourse, but even in boxing jones would win, larry brown is a retard who probably never sparred a day in his life.

The only thing that boxing and MMA have in common is that they are both combat sports, that's where the similarities end.

But I would like to add that being familiar with both I believe that MMA fighters can still benefit from a better understanding of boxing than what we have seen in the evolution of the sport up to now, not so the other way around as boxing has its own set of rules and is a single discipline.

And if I recall correctly Jones had trouble with Machida's striking, if Jones thinks his hands are as good as Mayweather's in a "hands only" boxing sense he's absolutely delusional. Phone Post 3.0

I have severe doubts that Jones would fare well against Mayweather in a boxing match.
Reach would be an issue, but that's about it.

The disparity in skill is off the roof.

I stopped listening at the third "i don't know about all that..." LOL

Jones wouldnt be even able to land a shot against PBF

SlapUsilly - I have severe doubts that Jones would fare well against Mayweather in a boxing match.

To talk of a guy who weighs almost 70-80 pounds heavier at fight time than Mayweather beating him up isn't saying much.

I've been in a lot of boxing gyms over the years and I've seen a lot of little good guys spar a lot of average big guys, with that type of size difference Mayweather would be difficult to catch being so small but it would only take one shot and it would be over, and it wouldn't have to be the strongest punch Jones could give.

Does Billy Conn vs Joe Louis ring a bell ??

But from purely a technical stand point do we really need to compare the boxing of who is arguably the best boxer to ever live with a MMA fighter ?? It's ridiculous.

Compare Floyd to other boxers and Jon to other MMA fighters, anything else is ignorance. Phone Post 3.0

Jones would manhandle Floyd, boxing or MMA (obviously). He literally weighs 100 lbs more than Floyd. Don't care how good Floyd is, this ain't a kung fu movie; in real life, the bigger guy is going to win.

SouthernGent - Why are the two even being compared?
Because Tyson Fury is acting like a hat full of smashed shit. He knows very well Boxing and MMA are two different monsters. Phone Post 3.0

Yeah but would he beat Larry Bird in a 3 point shootout?
It would be competitive.. Phone Post

Pro mma fighter beats a pro boxer at everything except a legit boxing match. Why this keeps getting asked is beyond me.

It might be a publicity stunt, it gets people talking about Boxing and MMA even though it is ridiculous. Phone Post 3.0

really
just like don fyre got ko'd in secounds by his 50 year old boxing coach

boxers win in boxing
mma wins in mma

kick boxing it depends

in a street also depends on the environment
because real fights are quick and dirty
a boxer might ko an mma guy before the mma guy even
knows he is in a fight

but it can go the other way...ofcourse
and if you think real fights are fair
you never been in one

real fights happen on the street
not rings or cage

in places like
malls,night clubs,parking lots,bars etc
and are very often not 1-1

and every boxer i have ever know has done well in fights
why?
because punching is the most thing in a real fight
that last between 2-30 secounds

all this being said yes mma fighters have more weapons for the street too
BUT

has good church boy jon jones
ever been in a real fight
i doubt it

his reach and all would seem different
once some drunk asshole smashes a beer bottle on his head from behind as jones was manhandling the drunk guy's friend

thats real fighting
