Jones vs Rampage Matchup - A Few thoughts

Rampage was a wrestler, then after changing his style he is the #1 p4p at picking apart sloppy boxing. Seriously think about it, most of his success in recent history come from his ability to slip and counter looping haymakers. Now he only uses his wrestling and scrambles to hold against the cage for a decision, or to sprawl and brawl

Times he did it
Chuck 2 (KO)
Wand 3 (KO)
Hamill (UD)
Jardine (when jardine boxed)
Rashad (almost knocked him out when he boxed)
Eastman (KO)
Hendo (UD)

He does poorly when they throw a variety of strikes and takedown attempts instead of trying to box him and take his head off with big punches:

Lyoto (landed with a straight and then used a variety of strikes to back him up)
Forrest (used low kicks when rampage wanted to sit on his punches)
Jardine (almost beat him in the portionsn of the fight he used kicks instead of punches)
Rashad (threw a punch or two to set up the takedown and when rampage went to counter he shot, cue gif)

I called rampage to UD hamill by sprawl and brawling him, JUST because hamill has a chin (so it wasnt gonna be a KO) and because hamills punches come off as haymakers. Rampage walked him down countering them all night.

That said, I think rampage's weakness is muay thai techniques:

Wand 1 clinch knees
Wand 2 clinch knees
Forrest low kick
Jardine almost beat him with low kicks
Shogun overall muay thai brawling but opened with a flying switch kick iirc
Ninjas muay thai gave him fits as well though he got robbed (according to everyone including rampage)

Rampage only seems to really have offensive striking success when he is capitalizing on looping haymakers/sloppy boxing by slipping and ripping with his hooks. That's how he knocked out chuck, wand, randleman and eastman and outstruck hendo, hamill and jardine.

I think Jones will have a lot of success if he throws strikes that were as varied as the ones he was throwing at Shogun, as long as he establishes range, stays away from planting in the pocket and doesnt get sloppy on his punches.

Fortunately for Jones, he throws every strike he and his coaches have ever heard of, and mixes them seamlessly with his takedown attempts. He also loved using his range on straight strikes on shogun, only throwing hooks when the opportunity was handing itself to him. if he continues this, i fully expect him to WRECK rampage, but if he wants to show off his boxing, hes gonna run into trouble.

Sorry for any confusion:
Wand 3 (KO) - means their 3rd fight ended with a Rampge KO

I agree with pretty much everything. I love Rampage but like you said if Jones mixes his strikes like he did with Shogun hes gonna put a beating on Rampage. Rampage has a great chin though and to add to the Machida fight comparison Rampage exploded off the fence when lyoto was teeing off and barely missed with 2 huge bombs. Thats the only way i see him winning....could happen.

Rampage's plod foward and flail punches will not work against Jones, imo.
