The technique standard to any Jones fight is him fully extending is arm out with an open hand and extended fingers. This is not fully illegal however just a few millimeters one way or another and it is illegal. This technique lends itself to eye pokes and should b made illegal. Extending the arm out fully should only b allowed with a closed fist.
Naturally his opponents will avoid the eye poke. Doing so disrupts the spacing and footwork which in turn gives Jones an even greater advantage. He's able to do this without repercussions against most fighters and is a big reason why he is able to use his reach so effectively. Most fighters don't have a huge reach advantage so they do not use this tactic. As we saw against Gus (who has similar reach) this tactic lends itself to getting hit.
Without the ability to extend his arm and fingers fully without repercussions Jones lack of actual technique and skill was made obvious
That fight showed technical brilliance from both of them... What are you talking about
You guys really just don't want to accept Jon Jones is a great fighter.
OnlyTheStrongSurvive - You guys really just don't want to accept Jon Jones is a great fighter.Lol wut jon is one of the best, but i dont think we can fully see his potential until he moves to heavyweight

bekk46 - That fight showed technical brilliance from both of them... What are you talking aboutThe only technique Jones displayed beautifully was the spinning elbows.

bekk46 -Wasn't talking about you lol. Just the general attitude of the UG towards him. They want to find anything they can to say he's not great.OnlyTheStrongSurvive - You guys really just don't want to accept Jon Jones is a great fighter.Lol wut jon is one of the best, but i dont think we can fully see his potential until he moves to heavyweight

OnlyTheStrongSurvive - You guys really just don't want to accept Jon Jones is a great fighter. He's great at using his reach.
The level of skill per individual technique leaves a lot to be desired. His physical attributes make up for the lack of skill. I wouldn't say his skills are bad. They're just not great
His ability to put it all together is above average but not great.
Gus was never touted as great. He doesn't use his reach as well as Jones vs shorter fighters. Jones uses his reach more effectively than fighter that has a reach advantage. When that reach advantage is gone (like vs Gus) his lack of greatness was exposed.
This thread however is about how he fully extends his arm fingers in his opponents faces. Fingers a few inches from your face will disrupt your spacing and movement. No fighter will let themselves get eye poked. Doing so is the only way to call attention to this tactic Jones uses but it will never happen.

This again? Wow.
kingkoopa -Yeah those elbows were ridiculous i would not wanna eat one of thosebekk46 - That fight showed technical brilliance from both of them... What are you talking aboutThe only technique Jones displayed beautifully was the spinning elbows.

diggity - This again? Wow.Did u assume this threadvwas about knee kicks?

The intentional side kicks directly to the knee cap need to be illegal in the UFC...
This is like saying "BJ Penn is a cheater because he is flexible.". Some guys have certain physical attributes they can use as tools and would be foolish not to use. Although he got warned against Vitor he's never actually had an issue poking people in the eye.
Jones has an insane reach on most people so clearly you would use that for elusiveness and closing distance. The open hand is most likely a natural reaction that's hard to combat in the heat of battle just like grabbing the fence or kneeing someone who may have a hand down.
"Jones has awesome technique"
-Someone who has never taken one lesson in any martial art
I do agree his wrestling is great 95% of the time and his striking has somewhat improved. He could get away with some of those goofy looking strikes when he has the reach advantage but someone like Gus they can pick away at the holes left by his lazy technique.
I am glad the refs are starting to scold him more for the finger thing.. can't wait to see him lose a point.
Jones will lose soon, the ug will be broken for days and I will have an orgasmic feeling of happiness for a fortnight.

You are an mma fan and you seem quite bitter..
Guess there is some truth behind your post =]
SporkChop - Well said, OP.Agreed, kicks to the knee should be banned in my opinion. I know there's the argument that submissions like armbars can break bones, but I respectful fighter looks to break bones with a submission, with high training comes the knowledge of what it takes to hyperextend a joint and what it takes to break it. There's no disputing Jones is a great fighter, but some of his methods leave a lot to be desired. Those kicks could end someone's career, often fighters have been afraid to move in as he continues to throw them
Jones isn't an exciting fighter to watch because of his tactics, like the one you described.
Personally, I don't like his knee kicks.
Just give it time. Jones is on the downhill of his career, now, and there's nowhere for him to run, now.
Cain is a -275 favorite against him, and Cormier is moving down to 205. Gustaffson is at 205, as well, waiting for another shot.
Jones can run, but he can't hide.

Jones apologists must be amongst the most delusional people in mma
Hadukon -Exactly. Im not saying his reach should be banned im saying holding your hand out fully extended with extended fingures should be ban. Theyre supposed to be pros. Train yourself not to hold extended fingures with a fully extended armErrk - This is like saying "BJ Penn is a cheater because he is flexible.". Some guys have certain physical attributes they can use as tools and would be foolish not to use. Although he got warned against Vitor he's never actually had an issue poking people in the eye.No ones complained about his bjs flexibility. People have complained about jones sticking his fingers out. Other fighters do it to but it helps jones more cause of his reach. He does it whenever his opponents try to come in. It is a bit of a cheap move

Lol people are ridiculous. "He makes his opponents scared to come rushing in" right, I forgot he was supposed to just let people rush in and hit him
Jon Jones is a great and skilled fighter; he also is a little dirty, but within the current set of rules.
