Judo Gene Lebell teaching Gegard Mousasi

Hayastan Academy's Technique: "Judo" Gene LeBell Perfects Gegard Mousasi's Cross Face - YouTube

Gene is such a savage

damn. Look at the mitts on Gene.

I really hope to meet Gene one day. I had one of his old submission books and would put the holds on kids on the playground when I was 10. Good times.

He came to some LE training I taught at, I got to spend a few lunch breaks with him and his students he would bring with him.  He is a master instructor and very handsome.

I would recommend if given the opportunity spend some time with him. He’s all he is cracked up to be.

He is one of those dudes that literally hurt you when he grabs you.

Flipping tendon strength from years of grabbing/gripping or whatever, but he can just hurt you when gripping.

I don't know if you were joking or not but that very well can be a contributing factor.

A judo OG like him whose had a full lifetime using gi grips, it wouldn’t surprise me.

I only trained no-gi but every now and again I’ll roll with friends who attend other gyms and train in the gi, and my friend Daryl who is similar in size to me had crazy grip when we rolled.

I was anxious to see how I’d do against someone slightly bigger/younger from a different school who trained in the gi, and his grip strength was my biggest take away. The roll was a fairly standard roll but I was blown away at the grip strength.

It’s arthritis lol

You guys saying his giant hands are medical problems -- there might be some truth in your smartass comments, but look at his forearms. That is a man with some crushing grip strength.

Back in the early 90s when he was probably in his 50s (I am guessing). Royce put out that challenge to everyone including Gene. Gene replied he had no interest in fighting Royce but would be happy to kick his father’s ass because they were closer in age. HAHAHHAHA

That's awesome!

I have no doubt he said that but do you by chance have the source of this so I can share it?

It was in black belt magazine around the time of the first UFCs. Letter to the editor I believe. “GENE LEBELL RESPONDS” or something to that effect.

“LeBell replied with an open letter in Black Belt magazine where he said it was not really realistic to fight the younger Gracies, like Royce, but if they wanted a challenge he would be honoured to fight the elder Gracie (Helio?).”

Another episode that could be included with the Gracie challenge occurred when the Gracies challenged “Judo” Gene LeBell. The Gracies wanted to match Rickson Gracie with the American grappling master, professional wrestler and stuntman.[11] LeBell, who was almost 60 at the time, replied that Rickson was much younger (27 years difference about 33 years old) than he and that he would instead grapple with Hélio Gracie who was closer in age to him (then 80).[11] When confronted with this reply, the Gracies accepted the challenge on the condition that Gene LeBell drop down to the 140 pound weight class of the 80-year-old Hélio Gracie. At that point, Gene LeBell allegedly did not accept their counter-offer because he was around 200 pounds and could never make it down to 140 pounds.[11] An interesting point is that Helio had fought considerably heavier opponents and had maintained that Gracie jiu-jitsu was made for a smaller man to defeat a larger man.[11]

Awesome thank you!

Here he shows how to pretend to fight
