What is your strategy for guard pullers and guard hoopers ?
I tend to get a dominant grip and violently and constantly pull down and up in a circular motion as I back away. It makes it hard for my opponent to pull or hop guard and opens him for attacks such as drop seoi, tomoe, etc.
The goal is to pass their guard when they are sitting... knee through pass is generally good. If someone is going to sit immediately, they will succeed.
If i am doing BJJ then I do BJJ...
I am one of those people who thinks it rather cowardly to go into a bjj tournament and start slamming people around because I have x many years of judo and competed at y level.
BJJ can be fun all by itself and I simply like BJJ for what it is-- really good newaza.
So, what do I do when people pull guard on me? I try to do the exact same things anybody else would-- stand up, pass their guard, don't get sucked in.
I am one of the BB instructors at Carlson Gracie Chicago and as some of you know, I have a judo background. Some of the BJJ guys are competing in the IBJJF Pan in march and they asked me to show some strategies. Besides the obvious, I showed them some and wondered if someone out there have any as well.
As far as training, I agree with Josh. Do BJJ while training in BJJ if you want to get good in BJJ.
slam
You will have to deal with this at some point in the fight. It is unavoidable. Try to get the 2 point takedown without exposing your back unless you are a drop seoinage specialists, use same side gripping to throw seems to work in BJJ.

I believe its maybe in March?

I've done the cart wheel pass a few times successfully. But that being said I would agree with Josh. Do BJJ for BJJ. If the guy knows you are a judo guy they will do anything to avoid your game. The rules allow for it so they can get away from it in BJJ.
That said, I'm not a fan of pulling guard. Its sport specific & not a good idea to do on the street.

Yeah I agree. When I do BJJ Im looking to do BJJ. I pretty much follow that same protocol.
However, if I am dealing with a wrestler or somebody who is set on top game and can smash me and we end up in a gripping war, which can happen in BJJ, I will use Judo and get my points. It's nice to have that in my back pocket and I do think there are exceptions. Im also on the small end of ultra heavy.
When I do throw in bjj however, its never any forward throw, I am nice. Ususally just some ashi waza to get things going when im stick of standing and jsut want to progress. It's never a goal though.
Exactly. I use basic ouchi kouchi combo. I never go for big throws mainly because the mats aren't exactly made for judo. They're the typical jigsaw tatami and are not for throwing just rolling.
