43, in good shape, never rolled or practiced bjj aside from my kids begging me to put them in guillotines.
Just wondering what I should expect from this place. Gracie's get a bad wrap for commercializing there brand to death but this gym has great reviews. The head instructor personally called me to set up a meet & greet (Don Cook).
Should I expect to refi my house to train here, is it worth it, or shop elsewhere for a more private gym?
A much lighter wallet
Gracie's get a bad rep if they're too into themselves. It's not a perfect art but it's awesome if you take it for what it is. I've trained at 4 different schools regularly and the gracie backed one is by far the best school for BJJ that I've been to.
clattymine -Thanks for the real response. Not sure what to expect, 1st session is Saturday so I'll update this post with feedback.

Worst case scenario is you get ten free days of shitty training
Best case is you find a great place to start training
Go in with an open mind and leave your ego at home. But most of all, have fun!
The gracie name is just an affiliation so that name doesn't mean much unless it's the gracie academy in Torrance. So really no telling, it could be anything. But one things for sure, don't expect it to be the best thing ever cuz it's a "gracie gym" that's just a name people pay to use unless there is an actual gracie teaching there.
As long as it takes attention away from your FF team then I say do it! I need all the help I can get.

Every year I'm like "I'm done with FF, why do I so this to myself?"
I'll be back next year, and the year after that and so on.
I think I'll take my frustrations out on the head instructor my first day at this gym.
To answer one part of your question, I think you're looking at about $150/mo. If I remember correctly.
Remember: start slowly... just little sips at first.
Then, after a bit, start drinking more deeply.
Later, gulps.
Before you know it, you'll be CHUGGING the Kool Aid like a German in the finals of the World Beer Games!
My first year playing and it shows.
Yeah try that it should go over well! What part of the country you in?
Whatever you do, don't tap the first day you roll with other people. Gracies and its members will look down on you. Just let it snap baby

Is your instructor going to be a blue belt at a "CTC". If so, run.
