All these belt testing threads got me thinking. Although I have never had a belt test from white to black, I now feel that belt tests are valid and necessary and should be very long and expensive.
While I was at it, I figured tests must be good for verifying everything that should be obvious. Thus I recently administered a 7.5 hour long test to my 8 year old daughter to see if she was actually qualified to be my daughter. Yes, I see her everyday and should know this intuitively, but tests are good. And long hard tests that otherwise competent and sincere people can miserably fail are even better. The only down side to this is that my daughter doesn't have much money.
Did she pass?
Snapple - Funny! But in all seriousness what about testing for affiliates?
Affiliates? Like what, step children?

this thread is full of win
This thread would have been more awesome had it in been in Korean

I actually LOL'd at this!
I recommend a series of high-priced privates then a retest in a couple months. (See if she can borrow the money from her mom to pay for them).
If she tires of your "tests", she can come to my house 3x a week, do 256 hours of chores and learn 78 methods of cleaning my house, sign a year contract and pay me 110.00 a month, then I might consider her my daughter in 1-2 years.
Although I appreciate the kudos and the many excellent suggestions, I have larger plans in mind.
I am going to make a 12 DVD set of my daughter testing curriculum and sell it to other BJJ instructors and students...oh, I mean fathers and daughters.
In any case, it will be wonderful once I am able to standardize exactly what every 8 year old daughter needs to know, or at least what she can pretend to know in a high pressure but otherwise totally contrived situation.
Just imagine the high standards and nearly robotic conformity I will be able to create. As an added bonus, this also obviates prolonged one-on-one contact with one's daughter. Why waste countless hours actually educating and raising a child when all you will need to do is drop in on your affiliate daughter for 7.5 hours when she is ready for her test.
An online Daughter Tutorial Library and video testing service would be appreciated in the future. I would like you to evaluate my Daughter to see if she is worthy of my love before I finalize her affiliation fee's.
This is ridiculous...
There;s no way I'm going to invest 8 years of my time, money, effort and love on the off chance that my daughter 'might' qualify once she turns 8. Can't I just pay up front when she's born and get a certificate or something?
Thank YOU John Frankl.
It is efforts like these that keep things in our world from being watered down even more than they are.
It is rediculous that people think that just because they can see someone do something everyday that they can judge whether or not that that someone can actually do that something.
Proposterous. Besides, how am I supposed to save up enough money to go to Vegas if I dont charge people to judge them on something they can obviously do?
Affiliate daughter!!! Awesome, simply awesome.
Hookers? I personally don't know anything about hookers.
But when I was living in L.A. I heard Charlie Sheen being interviewed on the radio. He had just been busted for consorting with a hooker.
The DJ/Interviewer sounded nonplussed when he asked him: "Charlie, you could have any woman you wanted, why are YOU paying for sex?"
To which Charlie replied: "I'm not paying for the sex; I'm paying them to leave."
I tell this to my 8 year old daughter all the time. Eventhough she knows the punchline, we still get a big laugh out of it.
Snapple,
"So its hard to keep track of every ones progress. They can do a move right while you happen to be looking, but then do stuff wrong the rest of the time. Seriously John, You don't have any type of messurement, test, check points, to evenulate them?"
I do have theoretical standards for hookers, but, as my lawyer had me state above, I have no direct experience.
Sorry, couldn't resis. Now, in all seriousness, I am not blessed/cursed with 150 white belts. I know and roll with all my students. I teach and watch all my students. No problem.
Now, there is the matter of my students' students. I do not see them very often, nor do I roll with them much. But this too is rather simple. I won't let anyone use my name unless I trust them implicitly. They do often ask me to come to their academies to give new belts, but I do not go to test anyone. Their standards are my standards, and never once have I been disappointed with the abilities of the students they have recommended. If anything, they promote more slowly than the main academy, for fear of disappointing me/watering down our team. All good.
TraneUFC,
I'm with you! God forbid that over the course of 100 plus years there be any evolution whatsoever.
And you might want to copyright that before every McDojo on earth uses something similar to justify their questionable business practices. Oh, wait, they already are.
Finally, don't sully Kano's good name. He wrote that applying minimum physical and mental effort to achieve maximum results was one of the highest aims of his Judo. Superfluous tests are not efficient physically, mentally, or financially.
John, fren, you wear your money gi for this test? you make sure daughter not take any loose biils?
TraneUFC - A dumb argument. If it is so "obvious", why have belts at all?
If testing was good enough for Jigoro Kano, it should be good for everyone.
Why have belts at all? All a belt does is let people who don't know you make a generalization of your skill level until they can determine that firsthand. what's the big deal,I swear I am getting a tye-dye belt.
The belt seems like an audiences response to your performance. It's a gratifying acknowledgement of a job well done. But at least in theater the audience stops applauding and goes home, in BJJ the applause has to go on and on and on. BJJ is well on it's way to TMA structures. Black Belt club when you get a blue belt? Testing is just a step toward that. Some instructors are integrating their previous eastern martial arts hierarchy/titles/rituals and attitudes on the BJJ public and testing reaffirms that path.
Testing now, one day standardized testing nationwide.
I don't need a belt, we can roll, then you can see me.
but I digress

i like belts. let's me know who to pick on
Whining about belt testing is just another thing for Americans to bitch about. We can't fathom our reality unless we have something to complain about.
