Karam Gaber (EGY) | Bridge-suplex master...was he the most accomplished wrestler ever to go into mma

Couture wrestled folkstyle in high school and college and actually started off doing freestyle in the army before he switched to Greco. I doubt Gaber has as good a double as a guy than an NCAA runner up. Gaber’s skills, strength and innate talent was well suited for Greco. If they wrestled in Greco at their respective peaks, Couture would likely have lost but would have been a tough out for Gaber.

Couture was in the top ten at worlds a few times. I think his best finish was 6th. Karam had a few good years where he was almost unbeatable. At that level though, you can run into somebody who takes it to you and they just have their day. Look at how Brandon Slay blasted Saitiev in the Olympics. Nobody expected that to happen. If you are good enough to be there, you have the talent to beat anybody. Few guys really handled Couture like that and he was a lot more physical than the Europeans were, so even if he would likely lose to Karam, it wouldn’t be easy or without a fight. You can’t take wins for granted. See the example above.

well

well yes world class guys are close in level of course
but its safe to say that jon jones would beat jan
even though both are world class and anything can happen

just to me Karam was a different level athlete then couture
just much much more gifted

Boy I just watched a couple Greco gold medal matches from recent olympics, and you’re not bullshitting around. It’s just a nasty, grabby, rough game.

That’s why Greco wrestlers, particularly Americans, were very good in the first 10 years of MMA. They already know how to fight basically.

yes usa Greco-Roman powerhouse

The US won a world team title in 07. The problem is that the development and coaching that helped lead to that all left and the results show. The US lost their way and figured the type of coaches that got them there, Ivan Ivanov and Momir Petkovic, were no longer needed. They were very wrong.

Trash take.

Meh. You can have your opinion. I’ve wrestled Greco a lot and had a couple MMA fights. I swear I’ve been hit in the head a lot harder from wrestling.

Please post an example of a high level greco match thats an ugly street fight minus closed fists. Youve never touched a mat in Greco.

There are plenty of examples. Also the last time I wrestled seniors I lost to the 3rd and 4th place finishers at the World Team Trials that year. At least if you’re going to lose, you lose to the best. Seriously though, ask anyone who has wrestled at that level and they will tell you how physical and brutal it can be.
