Karo vs. Yoshida...

I was watching Pride last night and I was very disappointed at how yoshida struggled to get any type of no gi throw off. He is so good with a gi but looked like he had never done a takedown in his life.

Ok, what makes karo, whose judo is at a lower level even now then yoshida, able to so aptly apply no gi judo on guys his size?!

That amazes me.

ummmmmmmmm. a few things..
but, lets not forget that last night yoshida fought crocop... and, well, karo fights in the UFC.

Again, we are talking about Cro-Cop now. Using that kind of logic, Kevin Randleman and Mark Coleman aren't good at wrestling because they also were unable to take down Cro-Cop in their combined three fights with him. Mark was a world silver medalist in freestyle wrestling and could not get Mirko down.

Yoshida actually came closer to throwing Mirko than Coleman or Randleman did. At one point Yoshida had Mirko hoping on one leg to avoid an uchimata. I don't think Karo would have been able to throw Mirko either even without the size difference. However, Fedor got Mirko down a couple of times with ouchi-gari.

kumikata, I wasn't amazed that mirko couldn't be taken down by coleman or yoshida, so much as I'm amazed at how well karo takes everyone down vs. yoshida or Nastula.

I think there's a big talent difference between Karo's opponents and Cro Cop. The thing that amazed me was that Yoshida seemed content to stand and bang with Cro Cop. That's just suicide. He should have been trying like a madman to get it to the ground.

I don't know, Karo's fought a pretty strong contingency of guys (St. Pierre, a RAW guy, Matt Serra, etc.) I mean, cro cop has been taken down by other guys (Nogueria took him down and isn't as good at takedowns as Coleman or Yoshida).

Karo also has been doing MMA-specific throwing practice longer than either Nastula or Yoshida.

the rooster: Plain and simply, Karo trains specifically to throw people without a gi and has for years.

Fedor threw Mirko a couple times.

Yoshida has thrown plenty of guys in Pride, Cro Cop has incredible takedown defense and that uchimata was very close.

cc took out his legs, very smart, and not done as much in mma..yoshi was solid in his stance which helped his leg vulnerability

Karo trains specifically for no-gi, for one thing. I'm not sure Yoshida really does that much.

I remember a while back I said that Yoshida should train with Karo's coach's.

Besides, he was fighting Mirko...

Gee Ben, you're digging up the old threads this evening.

It had me for a while. I was thinking Yoshida fought Crocop again last night.

LOL, for some reason sometimes I don't get the updated threads without refreshing. Thus my reply to old threads. I realized what I had done but said what the heck.
