Ever work out for the kidnappers? Even going back 30 or so years, how did kidnapoers ever expect to retrieve the money and not be watched by the cops?
Technology like it is today, is it remotely possible to pull off a kidnapping for ransom? Say you grab someone, tell her family to wire money to someone in a foreign country…as soon as money is received, you will dump the kidnapped person off in a parking lot somewhere…would the FBI or police in that country work with us?
It actually still happens a bit in NYC, but it’s immigrants kidnapping immigrants, and the ransom is paid by the family back home. Since all parties involved are immigrants, usually no one brings the police into it.
A few years back I lived a few blocks from a semi-industrial neighborhood, and kidnappers held a dude captive for an extended period of time in one of the warehouses. He eventually escaped, hijinks ensued.
Somali Pirates still do it to this day, sometimes they get killed by Navy Seals or Russians, sometimes they dont and make off with tons of money.

The whole thing is a messy business. Lots of kidnappings happen in Mexico City. The criminals kidnap people in business suits. Then they only ask for the equivalent of one or two thousand dollars.
When the money at stake is that low, the families figure they have nothing to lose, and so the kidnapers don’t need to be as wary. Usually you get the kidnapped relative back same day.
The more money involved, the higher the profile, the more time and logistics involved, the lower the chances that everyone walks away satisfied.
After the Lindbergh baby kidnapping, the crime stopped being worth it in the United States. Only a fool tries it here anymore. Elsewhere, when the value the kidnappers ask for is low enough that the ransom payers don’t care, it can still work.
That dude on JRE was kidnapped by Somalis and paid a 2 or 3 million ransom. They let him go. Not sure how the transaction went down though.
The companies that own those container ships pay for kidnapping insurance ...if for example the captain gets kidnapped for a 5 million ransom , the insurance company will pay the 5 million . The insurance companies make millions so to them it’s just a small loss
