This weeks training tip: Question: I have a 9 yr old son and he is getting ready to start his first year playing baseball. Any suggestions concerning preparation for the season?

Answer: At this early age GPP should be the main concern. Expose your son to a variety of different exercises that promote various motor qualities. Your strength and conditioning workouts do not have to be super structured at this point. The key ingredient in devising a successful workout for young kids is making the workout fun. It shouldn't seem like a workout make it fun. Kids also love it if you play with them. If your not in proper condition to do the drills with your son, Get In condition.

Consider purchasing an agility ladder, cones and hurdles. Kids generally love these tools. Remember keep it fun.

Any specific drills you like to use with those pieces of equipment, Coach Hale?

You bring up a good point, with children and pre-teens the gains will be due to motor learning not hypertrophy which should be taken into account when developing programs for the younger population.

i agree. a structured program is good and helps to track progress, but i admit i love a "fun" workout every once and a while. mixing it up and changing routines often has always seemed to help me.

tons of drills

start simple
example: ladder drills, in and outs , lateral in and outs, two leg hops

cones: just place comes in variety of configurations and have kid sprint, backpedal, lateral shuffle

hurdles: swing inside and outside leg over, duck under

have fun

there are a bunch of drills laid out in my book Maxcondition that use the above mentioned devices
pictures demonstrating technique as well
