How can someoene switch from a kimura attack from top control to an armbar in the scenario where the person underneath is defending the kimura fully? (e.g. by holding the belt)
Thankyou in advance.
From Side Control or Mount?
Go side mount or N/S keeping the kimura grip.
1st try breaking his grip by putting one knee on the material or belt next to where he is holding to take the slack out. Then Pull sharply.
2nd (if you can't break the grip) While he is holding the belt, move infront or behind him (either), Step over his body with both feet. Close your legs on his arm. One above his elbow and one below. Sit back, cross your ankles and squeeze his arm with your forearm or fist wedged in the crook of his elbow. Carefull, this is very tight.
You can still finish that kimura BTW.
Lets say you're attacking his left arm from side control and he grabs his belt.
Reach through with your left arm and grab your right bicep nice and high. Now reach under his elbow with your right arm and grab behind your tricep.
Keep it nice and tight and finish exactly as you would before.
Once you get the grip estanmilko is talking about and learn to apply it - he is done. Even if he is a big guy who can roll you over- keep the grip described and you will eventually come up in position to finish. I like to move up to his head after getting that grip and kind of sitout.
I was shown to step over his head and keep the other leg stretched out.
I tend not to go for bent armlocks for some reason, I have to seriously try to rectify that.
ive got a few question on this.. it happens to me a lot in judo too.
when you have "side mount" and are attacking the "left arm"... am i wrong to assume that your lower body is on his right side and you are laying across his torso and atacking the far arm (left arm) or are you working on the near side?
i just want to be sure that im on the same page so i can follow you guys and give these a try next time it happens to me.
thanks.
BTW.. the technical advise in this forum is awesome.
Josh, the first version, attacking the far arm. I doubt the version I explained above would be Judo legal though. I can't see how you could get it to work on the elbow rather than the shoulder.

Correct. You are attacking the far arm.If you want to do the armbar you can just do the spin around armbar on the far arm and then work on breaking the grip from the armbar position.Tips for that here: http://s89065344.onlinehome.us/savedthreads/armbar%20problem%20grip%20breaking.htmFor breaking the grip from the kimura: http://www.mma.tv/TUF/index.cfm?ac=ListMessages&PID=1&TID=68929&FID=43
