I am seeing an orthopedist on Monday (for other injuries) but will ask him about this too:
Right knee on the left side of the actual kneecap, very sensitive to the touch, and also hurts when using it, occasionally when going up or down stairs. It has been this way for about 2 weeks -
what could this possibly be and what is the prognosis? (I realize that any answers are just speculation until I really get it checked out, just very curious)

You should already have the results from your doc. Was it Patellofemoral Syndrome or "Lateral facet Syndrome"?
Commonly called "chondromalacia".
