Knee question?

I have a lateral Minscus Sist on my knee. Im getting a MRI in the next week to see if i have fully tore anything underneath. My question is the doc said if i remove the sist its major surgery and would be out for a long time and it could come back. He also said after the MRI if i dont have a full tear i could live with it and fight and maybe get the surgery after im done. Does anyone have this injury and would suggest living with the sist or getting removed. The tear i will know about by next week and go from there.

it's a meniscus tear under neath?

I'm not the expert on knees, but I know Joe's had his meniscus scoped twice and that is surgery, but relatively minor. He was boxing 2-3 weeks later...

the syst. now that worries me.

I currently have what the doc said is a bakers cyst and meniscus tear. I'm going in for surgery next month.

The doc said the syst would mean i have to get cut open which would suck. And he said it could come back which sucks even worse. So if i need surgery if its torn he said scope for the tear and cut open for the syst. He said my recovery would be at least six months before i could start training 100%.

He said if its not torn to just live with it if i wanna compete. Since im getting to be a OLD man im praying for that.

Thanks Chris i apprecaite it the response.

Tommy do you fight? And if so what did he say the recovery time would be? Did he say you have to be cut open for the syst?

A doctor will always exaggerate recovery time to avoid lawsuits. You might need 4-8 weeks. I tend to fight guys that train are used to dealing with pain more so than the regular person and can usually get back in the gym sooner than they think.

Nah, no fighting, just bjj. I had a small meniscus tear in my left knee a few years ago and I was out for about a month and a half. I'm thinking this will be a little longer, even though he didn't give a time for recovery.

I guess i will have to wait until i get the full results from the MRI and go from there. 4 weeks is not bad and thats what i was hoping for. It sucks watching everyone elase train and get ready to fight. If i didnt get the freaking syst it wouldnt be a big deal. Damn i have the worse luck. This has been a depressing 3 weeks. But it could be worse so i wont complain.

Thanks Again and once i get a update i will let everyone know.

Yo, who is doing the MRI? The ortho guy or are you going to separate place? If you have a meniscal cyst it is the result of a meniscal injury. Depens on how large the injury is.

If you want, send me the results and I can look at them and I have a good friend that is a Sports Med Orthopod.

Good Luck!

Andrew send me a email at tapuoutct@yahoo.com and i will send you the results once i get them and go from there. Thanks alot, i appreciate that very much.

I had a cyst and the doctor removed it when he was repairing my meniscus. For me it was nothing, but I guess it might depend on your cyst. I was able to start working out after a few weeks like Chris said, but had to wait two months for wrestling/grappling because I had both meniscus removal and a significant repair (and repairs take a longer time to heal than removals).

i removed a cyst on my cat's back by injecting it with hydrox, use diluted food grade, good luck!

I've never has a cyst but I did tear the miniscus in my knee and opted to NOT have surgery. That leg still works, now the other leg...

I had the cyst on my LCL and continued training and wrestling, it was the worse pain ever and ultimately i got the surgery. I also completely tore my LCL as a result, not sure if it had to do with the stability of my knee or what, but the original injury was a minor tear that developed the cyst. I would definately recommend the surgery asap if you plan on competing again anytime soon!!

Best of luck!!

What up JC ya the doc said if the mri comes back where its a partial tear to just leave it alone for now if i wanna still compete.

Bryan did you get the sugery and if so how is it feeling now? Can you run and stuff like that with no pain?

I did not have a cyst removed but approx. 1 year ago I had complete acl reconstruction on both knees and 80%removal of my lateral meniscus on one leg and menial miniscus on the other. It sucked but i was training within 3 months and rolling hard and doing full mma training in 5 months. If it was just the meniscus surgery I would have been back in a couple weeks. I think your dr may be being a little cautious

Hey Andrew. I've had both of my knees injured with minor tears recently, but no cysts. My doc essentially said the same thing: as long as the tear is minor and I lay off for a few weeks (with no knee swelling) then I shouldn't worry too much. He also said that I could put of surgery 2-3 years and take care of them at that time as long as they don't get any worse. Trust me, two weeks of taking it easy (not really training) made a world of difference and I can run with no problems and have near full range of motion and can roll and spar now full on. Hope this input helps.

Hey guys thanks for all the help, Andrew i will send you all the stuff once i get it. Thanks Again guys

Andrew.... email Rick Caldwell. Rick@massmma.net

He had the same surgery I think, a couple weeks before I had my meniscus scoped. He had a much slower recovery than me and I was training hard before he was doing much of anything. I think the surgery for that is longer recovery than mine (I was in Hawaii grappling 4 weeks later), but Rick is just a bitch too (love you Rick).
