KOTC Calagary an Overview

In the interests of checking out the MMA scene , some friends. my
girlfriend, and myself headed down to Calgary and took in the recent KOTC -
FIRESTORM, The event was held in the Corral, which as a venue has seen
better days. Well my report:

To start things off, when a promoter says an event starts at 6:30 please
have the decency to start on time and not an hour later. Apparently from
talking to others, fighters hadn't even finished a rules meeting in the
back, or had begun getting dressed yet by 6:30. I'm not sure if this is a
promoter problem, or a commission problem or both, however please correct
it.

The show producers put some good pyrotechnics in with the event. A lot of
fireworks, and other fireblasts, were pretty impressive. The use of the
ring girls both inside and outside the cage was a really good idea, and
there was a lot of variety of eye candy. They had pretty good video
coverage as well with the use of TV screens showing the action inside the
cage, which helped if you didn't happen to be close to cageside.

Chuck Liddell and Rich Franklin made appearances briefly, and helped sell
the card. It seems KOTC is using the celebrity appearance at events as part
of their promotions which seems to work pretty well. In Edmonton they used
Royce Gracie.

The fights were pretty good, but there were some obvious uneven match-ups,
and some refereeing concerns. The fact that there were quite a few bouts on
the card, probably helped offset anything really bad. The best fight of the
night had to belong to Blake Frederickson and Chris Ade. That fight alone
was worth the price of admission. The main event was really good with Joe
Doerkson putting on an impressive show of stand-up. His business is handing
out pain..and it seems business is good.

I thought Keith Crawford did a good job as an announcer, and took the time
to give interviews to the fighters after the matches. I think that might
have had to do for some future TSN coverage though.

The event was marred by way too many fights in the crowd. At one point
there were like 12 people going at it with chairs etc. I think this is what
happens when you start fights late, and people have been drinking too long.

I mean I like to bring a girlfriend to these shows, and not have to worry
about retards trying to prove how tough they are in the stands. If you guys
feel like fighting give your name to a promoter and go at it. Bashing
someone with a chair isn't going to help our sport grow, and may in the
future keep away fans.

The one highlight had to have been some chick who was constantly removing
her top, and showing off her boobs, much to the delight of the fans. Her
performance although enjoyable was cut short due to security.

Anyways that's it in a nutshell

Hurse.

Kotc was a top notch show besides the crowd stuff like hurse said.

Man i gotta say i have a new respect for Cris Ade after Last night giving blake a tough time, and not folding after those knees, can't say he has a glass chin, good job!

el dirte ,What a champ,he gave a clinic of mma againts a tough seguin

chick with the titties ,thanks for comin out!

Louro destroyed that kids legs with those kicks!

after that show they might have to have the next one at the saddledome

Chris Aid and Blake was an amazing fight. Chris might have some of the fastest takedowns I have ever seem. Both fighters put on a great show and Blake showed a lot of class by giving Chris his well deserved props after the fight. Chris has the biggest heart in MMA and was a pleasure to watch. I excpect huge things from that guy in the very near future.

Hurse, I agree with you on the start time. I have better things to do with my time than to sit around for an hour waiting for the event to start. Having said that, once things got underway it rolled along pretty smoothly.

Another tip for the promoters, stop shining lights in people's eyes. There were 5 areas that were spotlighted (or floodlighted, whatever) continuously before the fights and during the intermission. It got really annoying after a couple of minutes. If you need some light, turn up the house lights a little.

As for you yahoos throwing things at the cops while they were escorting titty girl out, stop being dicks. You accomplished nothing except forcing me to throw my pop-soaked jeans in the wash when I got home.

BTW, what's the point of throwing people out for showing their tits? The girl wasn't hurting anyone. Sure, she was distracting a little attention from the fights but I think a better solution would have been to ask her to do it between fights. Yeah, that's it... titty shows between rounds. I think I might be on to something.

Oh, the fights were pretty good, too.

Joes stand up looked good!!! He landed a very nice ghost (fake a kick and then punch) that looked like it hurt.

Props to Chris Ade for takeing the fight on short notice...Fri 2pm

Boos to Chris Ade for driving himself down from Edmonton himself while dehydrated from cutting weight and CRASHING HIS CAR on the highway... dude your way too lucky, next time call a buddy to drive ya down.

Props to Chris for taking the fight after said crash...

Oh ya,

Props to titty girl.

Hope you make it out to Edm.

Thanks for coming to the show, guys! We appreciate your support!

I'm really short of time, as most of you know, we are doing another show this Saturday in Edmonton. I just want to add a few comments on what's posted here.

First, sorry for the late start. I'm not going to point fingers, but the show was ready and TSN was ready at 6:30. The delay was not due to anything we had control over. I believe we started at exactly 7:15. (expect Edmonton to be on time)

I'm not sure what the deal is with the lights, but I'll check on it.

We had a few problems in the last few days leading up the the fights. Guess there's some people that don't want us doing shows in Alberta, I'll just leave it at that. Also, the flights were a nightmare. About 75% of our fighters flew in and with the recent weather disasters in the US, flights were canceled and delayed.

Bringing celebrities is something I'll try to do for every KOTC event we do. This is the highlight of the night for many fans. Some are crying, some are shaking so bad they can't hold their drink. It's a thrill to be able to do that for people and that's the biggest benefit. Of course it does help sell tickets and also gets some media attention.

We need Canadian referee's in this sport and we will continue to use them. When you watch the replays, you have the luxery that he doesn't. He has to make an instant judgment call from what he is able to see. Fighter safety is a priority in KOTC.

Not sure what we can do about fights breaking out. I don't think it drinking, some people are just idiots.

Here's a few other coments.

Guests: Rich Franklin, awesome guy! Chuck Liddell, signed steady for two hours at the gate! It was nice to have Herb Dean (He will be in Edmonton as well) Also, Chris Simon and five more Calgary Flames. Lance Storm, former WWE superstar. A few more when I think of them.

Fighters: THANK-YOU!!! Great fights and good sports all around! Some of these guys even went out on day of the fight and passed out flyers downtown, Calgary. We appreciate it very much, and if there is anything we missed, please let us know.

Pyro: I love it when shit blows up. I think lots of people are just like me!

Fans: With a very few exeptions, they were great and thanks again to any of you reading this.

Ken

Thanks for responding on the forum to the fans with class. I can't imagine
how hard it must be to be a promoter, and often you guys take a lot of abuse
with is unwarranted. I really appreciate the fact that you came on here and
addressed our comments, and took everything we said, openly. From what I've
heard you are a stand up guy, who is really trying to improve the sport of
MMA in Alberta, and Canada.

When I post, I try to be as objective as possible. All the comments were
made so that as a promoter you know exactly what is working and what isn't.
Again I am really impressed that you came on here and shared with all of us,
about some of the behind the scenes stuff that sometimes we take for
granted.

MMA is still an evolving sport. It is unique, in that the martial art
heritage that some of the disciplines in incorporates, are thousands of
years old. Yet in it's own way it is still very much young, and still needs
nurturing. Lets face it, they still have problems in the Olympics and many
of those sports have had decades to refine their disciplines.

I think Alberta fans are really fortunate that we have incredible promotions
like this to be able to go to. I think the fighters are fortunate as well.
From what I've heard, we have athletic commissions that are working with
promoters to try to regulate the sport, versus all the problems in Ontario.
Think of where we will be in the next 5 years.

I wish you the best of luck with your future shows, and will continue to
support them and all regulated MMA in Canada. Congrats to all participants!

Hurse

kanada kidd,

Thanks for posting in a calm and respectful fashion. I certainly hope that is the formula for success in MMA as opposed to the shit talking and threatening approach used by some.

All the best to KOTC.

Congrats on what sounds like a great night of MMA!
