Hey San Diego UGers.
I'm an east coaster (DC area) who just started BJJ a month ago. I'm a white belt, and a crappy one at that, but I love it so far. Problem is that my job has me in La Jolla for the summer (fly out tomorrow morning, and don't head home until end of August).
I'm staying in La Jolla shores (off Avenida De La Playa), and want to know where there is reasonably priced training in the area. I've heard University of Jiu Jitsu is awesome, but as that's all the way downtown, I'm afraid of traffic jamming me up.
Is that my best bet, or are there other good gyms closer to me?
Any advice would be appreciated.

Looks like a pretty good option to me. La Jolla is a great area. Enjoy your time and training there!
Clark Gracie is the man!
I train at Throwdown and it's simply awesome, it's been my crew since I started BJJ 11 years ago. Having trained with Clark at one point before T-down was built, I have the credentials to say he is one of the best instructors in San Diego. He is also cool as hell and is extremely mature for his age.

Where were you training in the DC area?
you can also check out roy harris who is near mira-mar

I'm also at Throwdown (throwdownsandiego.com) and I completely echo what Tim says. I've trained at multiple places in San Diego and Throwdown is the most complete, well-priced, accommodating training facility around.
We have classes all day, everyday, with varying ranges of gi and nogi, and different class size and skill level, So I am sure Throwndown can meet your needs.
Your job has you in La Jolla? Are you an attorney?
I have not trained at the academy but I have worked out at the gym where it is located and it is a very nice facility. I live right up the street as well. If I recall correctly you can purhcase a gym membership and get a discount on BJJ. The last time I checked I believe the prices were around $80 a month for unlimited training but that may have changed so don't take that as gosepl. The las time I was in there was a few months ago.
All,
Appreciate it. I don't think I'm going to be doing anything today, as I'm gonna be pretty jetlagged by the time I get out of work, but I'll check out throwdown at the earliest opportunity.
And no, not an attorney, I'm a gov't contractor.

Sounds good, brother.
Great nogi group on MWF at 6:30 a.m. if you are looking to train with us before work.
Hopefully we'll roll into each other soon.
If you're interested in training at the University of Jiu-Jitsu and are willing to drive to Throwdown, you might as well train at UniJJ. They are literally like three blocks from each other.
Are you working in La Jolla or just staying there? If both, do yourself a favor and check out Clark Gracie's academy.
san diego is a bjj mecca.
I went kindergarten with jeff clark..thats old school!!

Alfredo Barum is close to you, about 10 minutes away. He's a Rodrigo Medeiros Black Belt.

Rodrigo is in Pacific Beach and is where I train when I'm in the area.
Clarks school is also very good but there's a reason why he chose Rodrigo to mentor him when he moved to the area.

What if Reggie Cardiel was how I heard about the UG back when I was a freshman? Is that Old School too?
Make sure you buy a shorty wet-suit online and some snorkel gear. You can walk to some world class snorkelling in La Jolla cove. Water doesn't get above 60, so a suit is advised.
