So, I really want to get this done...but I hate layoffs from training, especially with things going good lately. How long am I realistically looking at as far as a layoff or modified training routine?
The eye doc I saw told me there are two kinds of lasik surgury that he could do ... the common one where they create a flap, and another one where they work directly on the eye surface. He does not recommend the one with the flap for anyone that does contact sports, due to the risk of the flap getting dislodged. But he also said the recovery time is longer for the one where they work on the surface.
Can anyone help me out with some perspective from their experience?
i had lasik done almost 10 years ago. been doing bjj for about 6 years now, played basketball before that. had many collisions and face mashing since then. no issues at all
the only issue is getting hit in the eye area within a few weeks of the surgery. just take a month off. or wear goggles ala kareem for a few weeks until the doc says it fully heals as it takes a while for lasik to heal properly.
i was driving and at work the next day.
we have a guy that wears prescription goggles and trains, ur teammates should adapt to not touching ur face initially
I agreewith walbjj. I had the flap procedure done. Took one week off then wore googles for three weeks, doing judo, sambo, bjj. No issues at all. One caution is to not rub your eyes from sweat because you can dislodge the flap.
Sorry, Double post.
I've just had the KRP version - the outside layer - done 10 days ago. I still can't see properly (sometimes there is clarity but motly blurriness - it will take 6 weeks before the blurriness stops completely I was told).
They tell you there will be "some discomfort" but I was in agony for a few days and I was drugged up for 5 days after the operation and so couldn't work.
Even though my eyes will eventually be fine, I'm quite annoyed with all of the half-truths I was told BEFORE the operation.
I had one of each - Lasik in my rt eye, prk in my left. Covered my bases...
I did what someone earlier said - I wore raquetball goggles when I trained for a while (no rolling for several weeks).
almost 4 years later, no issues with either eye. The PRK recovery was miserable, to say the least. for quite some time I'd wake up occasionally with my eye so dry it felt like somebody sandblasted it - if you haven't experienced it, i can't explain it. The Lasik eye experienced almost no discomfort.
If i had it to do all over again, I'd do it - just a lot sooner!
Oh and by the way, the surgery itself is nothing. My wife had Lasik on both eyes - and the doctor had to wake her up during the procedure (no, she wasn't on any sedatives).
I just had the procedure done around two months ago and after a lot of research and talking with the doctors, i decided to go with Lasik. Lasik provided me the best and fastest results I needed for my profession and lifestyle. Secondly, it gave me better options to making sure my eye sight is good, which it is actually 20/10 now, and with more clarity than i ever had with contacts.
After getting it done, i waited a month to begin training again, then cautioned everyone i rolled with at first just to keep their hands away from my eyes. Funny thing is, i got poked more in the eyes my first week back than i have in years of training.
I have had no issues. This isn't to say i wont ever, but my surgery was nothing but a success in all ways. be cautious and take time off from training to heal as best as possible, but don't let it keep you from training. Sports googles are a pain in the butt but you can try them, however the surgery has actually helped me get more defensive in protecting my face when rolling so that's a plus.
For the guys who had the PRK done...was it the newer version, "Lasek" or something else? That one is available here, and what I was thinking about getting done. I was also thinking about getting just one eye done...sometimes I wear just one contact and my vision seems fine like that
Anyone considering LASIK should investigate the facility that they are going to before hand. A class action suit was just filed in Nevada against a LASIK facility that is ran by a disbarred doctor from another state. The subject doctor was disbarred for life in the state of Ohio and identified by a member of the Ohio medical board as a serial predator. It appears that the LASIK center in Nevada had not been performing proper pre-operative examinations before surgery to determine whether their patients were proper candidates for LASIK (if your cornea is too thin or your eye is abnormally shaped and you have the procedure performed, you are fucked).
"PRK done...was it the newer version, "Lasek" or something else?"
PRK is different than LASIK and is largely performed on people who are not candidates for LASIK.
My update:
It's been three weeks now and my vision is great. I'm disgruntled that I wasn't fully informed of the side-effects before the operation but I'm not very happy with the results.
what arent you happy about?
i did prk about 10 months ago. It hurt like a bitch for 2 weeks, i mean bigtime. i didnt like the fact that they played down the pain before performing either.
i see great now, other than some soreness when i first wake up once in a while im happy with teh results.
pre op i was -5.75 in the right and -5.50 in the left. yeh, blind as a bat.
ps. i wish i woulda known how much you can bargain with these places, because you really can.
I'm very happy with the result - just not happy that they didn't tell me how long it would actually take to recover. I had clients fly out from Italy to Australia to meet me for work and I had to postpone on them because I was told I could go back to work in 5 days.
Best money I ever spent. I wrestled half-blind for most my life and after that it really took some getting use to afterward. My first day back after about a month my depth perception was off. My shot was way off, but it comes around.
Does anyone know the rules about fighting with lasik? I heard you can't fight in Nevada if you has the procedure.
