Lasik and Still Train??

Getting Lasik eye this Saturday and the MD said, " No Boxing". The alternative is surgery which is a little more of a hassle getting done but wouldn't comprise boxing....

Anyone had these procedures done? I would like to read your experience

A Norwegian female pro boxer (one of the best in the world currently afaik) had eye surgery back in 2008, and she's still active (obviously).

I'll try to find out what type of surgery she had. Phone Post

I had it last December and train with no problems

She chose Lasek, she was nearsighted (-4 on both eyes).

I had it done and wore protective eye goggles for a couple of weeks while sparring. To be safe i would take 4 weeks off then your eyes should be fully healed. I had lasik 7 years ago and havent had any problems with training

Benson Henderson had LASIK. He's fine.

Thanks for the encouraging insight!

He said no boxing because of the incision they make in lens, which like someone stated is a flap in the lens. The danger is it could tear open.....

Just the .00000001% chance of having that flap get reopened/torn off has kept me from getting the Lasik and just dealing with contacts. I really enjoy looking at porn too much with depth perception to lose sight in one eye, and my chicks tits would just look smaller in non-3D

Bendo had PRK surgery not lasik http://mmaweekly.com/fighting-blind-ben-henderson-opening-his-eyes-2

PRK is cool but they do one eye at a time, I think week intervals.....and there is no incision in the eye, just straight laser

MD said is the best option for a combat athlete Phone Post

Most commissions will not let you compete after lasix.  PRK is only option if you want to continue training.

I say bs....

I had Lasik  13 years ago I have trained fought mma kickboxing etc all that time with no problems.

It heals fast.

I had PRK done in February of 2010. Both eyes at the same time. The healing took a bit longer, but it wasn't bad at all. After getting poked, punched, kicked and elbowed numerous times since then my vision is 20/20. Butter.

At wrekker, the flap never "heals" completely, but by 24 months, it has finally strengthened at the stroma to be considered only damageable by the same force that would hurt a non-LASIK eye.

Wait - if it's only damageable by the same force that would hurt a non-LASIK eye, doesn't that qualify as being completely healed?

get prk...feels bad first day go home and sleep and you will wake up feeling like sand is in your eyes but its not that bad....i was training and sparring three days later with no issues i fought 6 weeks later....i would not advice training 3 days later thats dumb but its not a bad recovery at all

Harlemsavoy - what % of the procedures are either unsuccessful or regresses in the future? I know one person that Lasik actually made their vision worse (older lady though so that likely had something to do with it), and a few others that have had their vision change after a few years of 20/20 vison.

I had Lasik done 2.5 years ago and I have had no problem with my muay thai training and sparring. It was the best thing I ever did, as I had horrible eyesight before and now I have perfect 20/20 vision.

your odds of getting a bad eye infection because of contacts (always putting your fingers in your eyes and stuff) is waaaayyyyyy higher
