I work for a Mortgage Company and one of my fellow Loan Officers, DR, came limping into our office Monday with an interesting story. DR was standing in the parking lot of a bar over the weekend, talking on his cell phone. DR is 6’6”, works out, has a Karate background and appears to be in shape. DR was standing in a parking space, and a car drove up and entered the parking space to park. Apparently, the driver did not see DR and almost hit him. DR, took his open hand, hit the hood of the car and angrily yelled for the driver to watch where he was going. DR started talking again on his cell phone, while the driver backed out of the stall. DR took his eyes off of the driver. Suddenly, DR heard the sound of a racing engine and saw the car accelerating directly at him. DR tried to jump out of the way, but tripped on the cement bumper barrier in the parking space and fell to the ground. DR looked to his right to see the small compact car, possibly a The driver drove away and was not apprehended. DR was not able to get a good description and there were no witnesses. There were some CCTV security cameras monitoring the parking lot, but the incident was not recorded. The bastard got away with it. DR suffered a broken jaw, numerous bruises, cuts and scratches. DR was lucky, it could have been a lot worse. To add insult to injury, somebody stole DR’s cell phone and it cost him $250 to replace it. I told DR I was sorry about what happened to him and asked if he knew what he did wrong. DR knew what he did wrong, as victims usually do after the fact when it is too late. DR probably won’t make the same mistakes again, he learned the hard way. The cowardly attacker is still out there, having gotten away clean with Assault With A Deadly Weapon (ADW). As I always say, “Learn from the mistakes of others, it’s much less painful.” What do you think DR did wrong, besides not read my threads on the UG? Gary Hughes
good lord. he is lucky to be alive. Karma will get the driver.
He acted like an arrogant prick standing in a parking space? Smacked down on someone else's car when he was the one in the wrong place doing the wrong thing (standing in a parking space going yada-yada on a cell phone)? Thought being tall and having a Karate background gave him some right to chastize a person he does not know for making a blunder? I dont know looks like he did alot wrong. Glad he is alright, maybe he wont act like an asshole next time?
two sides to every story. He should not be standing in the middle of a bar parking lot at night talking on the cell phone, unaware of potential hazards. Then, when "he learns the hard way" he loses his cool and smacks someone's car which instigates a situation.
That said, I'm sorry that your friend is having a bad time of it and the driver is just as guilty for losing his cool and should be punished for trying to kill someone.
madsexy1 is correct. DR is very lucky to be alive. It's obvious the driver didn't have much respect for his life.
I think there are lots of things DR can learn from this incident. He paid a painful price for the lesson, we can all gain something from this for free.
karusu...Thanks. DR is not really a friend, just a co-worker, I don't know him very well.
The driver definitely more to blame, although DR could have avoided the whole thing. The driver is the one who escalated the incident into a felony. DR could have been killed and so could the driver, depending on who he tried to run over.
Tell DR to go watch Million Dollar Baby, and remember to protect himself at all times
Normally, I would say that it wasn't justified, but maybe he should think twice about being so disrespectful as to just sit there and talk on his phone when a car is trying to get in to a parking spot...
Just my two cents...Other parts of the world, he could have been shot instead of runover...
he shoulda waited till the guy got out of his car.
DR was in Code White when the car first pulled up. He should have been in Code Yellow. You should never be in public, while in Code White!!
DR was in Code White again, after he hit the hood of the car and went back to the cell phone. DR should have been in Code Orange and never taken his eye off of his opponent.

glubglub5 has issues. Were you the driver?
Of course the driver is an ignorant p.o.s. and could be charged with all kinds of stuff, but DR sounds like a hothead. Bottom line is that he escalated the situation by smacking the guys car. He is naive if he thinks he can do that and then just turn around and not expect any retaliation. For some people their cars are their lives, as strange as that may seem for some it is true.
Besides that who stands in a parking space talking on the phone? Thats what sidewalks are for. If there are cars on either side of the empty space the driver (considering the way most people drive) might not even see him until its too late.
DR sounds like he thinks he's ten feet tall and bulletproof. I knew a guy like that once. He's dead now.
Could we get a break down on the codes again?
hope DR is going to be ok, with that being said remember that there's always someone more crazy than yourself out there. always telling Skip that anyway.
later, ma
Good posts by Sambist007 and fishfish.
LOL @ glubglub5!!
Lawdy Mama is correct.
Most rational people wouldn't run somebody over like. It's good to realize there are people in the world who don't think like you and will kill somebody over nothing.
Charmcity...here are Jeff Cooper's Awareness Codes, per your request:
CONDITION WHITE- White is the lowest level on the escalator. In Condition White one is unaware, not alert, oblivious. This state can be characterized as "daydreaming" or "preoccupied". People in White tend to walk around with their heads down, as if watching their own feet. They do not notice the impending danger until it literally has them by the throat.
You see examples of this frequently. When was the last time you saw someone in traffic roll right up to a barricade or stalled vehicle, then expect you to stop and let them into your lane? They're operating their vehicle in Condition White. When a motorist runs over a motorcyclist and kills him, what are the first words out of their mouth? "I didn't see him." They're not lying. They were so inattentive and complacent that they did not notice a 200-pound man on a four hundred pound machine right in front of them. When this same guy runs past a stop sign and broadsides your car, killing your child, he will say, "I didn't see it.".
These same guys will be the victims of violent crime, because the criminal targets the inattentive, the complacent, the lazy, the distracted, the preoccupied. Why? Because the criminal wants to get to him, get what he wants from him, and get away from him, without being hurt or caught. Who would be the easiest person to do that to? Someone in Condition White. I'm sure you've seen or read about the Miranda card police officers carry. From it they read off a suspect's rights before questioning him. Dedicated victims carry a similar card in their pockets. If they are still alive when the police arrive, they take this card out of their pockets and read from it, as follows:
" Geez, it all happened so fast.
He materialized right next to me.
I never saw him.".
So, when would it be acceptable to be in Condition White? When in your own home, with the doors locked, the alarm system on, and your dog at your feet. Then, you can turn off your mind, if you wish, because you have sufficient layers of protection and warning to enable you to get up, get your gear, and get your head running. If you leave your home, you leave Condition White behind. The instant you leave your home, you escalate one level, to Condition Yellow.
