UFC 116 has already taken a massive hit with the loss of Wanderlei Silva due to injury. This morning it appeared the event was completely screwed when, credentialed UFC media member, Bleacher Report ran with a rumor that Brock Lesnar was gone from the event. After a few calls to the powers that be with the UFC, the story was discovered to be a hoax. The website has pulled the story.
It opens the debate of what's news and what's simply internet chatter taken from message boards. The problem here is that Bleacher Report appears in dozens of newspapers around the country. If a reader sees a headline, doesn't read the story or look at the source, it could be taken as fact. Major newspapers like the L.A. Times, San Francisco Chronicle, Seattle Post-Intelligencier and Houston Chronicle simply run the B/R headlines.
A quick scan of author's bio and it unearths the alarming discovery that Tom Kelly is just 17 years old. He may be the future of journalism but his judgement on this one was a little shaky. It also opened up a nice discussion on journalism on Twitter this morning between Yahoo! Sports' Kevin Iole, a journalist with 28 years experience, and the high Irish secondary school student. Lol, hi it's me Tom Kelly, if you read the article it says all over it 'Rumours have it' and stuff, and people took it as fact. What the hell? It's getting me in trouble and everything with the website, despite the fact they often publish rumour and all I did was do the same. Apparently the UFC complained, are you serious? I'm seventeen and said it was a rumour, learn to read
Oh and also the website didn't pull the story, I chose to, they put it on their main page

If they took it as fact and not as a rumor then thats their fault. People getting paid much more than you screwed up.

Kevin Iole told me he was sorry I got banned and tried to have my ban reversed, so I wouldn't quote him to support your comment that 'You would've banned me too'.
I'm perfectly grown up for my age, i'm not the one going round insulting teenagers on forums because they published a rumour under the rumour tag of the website. I'm aware i'm not a pro journalist, i'm also 17 i'm still in school, it would be weird if I had a full time job.
