That Merigali kid is impressive. I expect big things from him in the next couple years.
That's no brown belt..... kid is good as hell. Awesome match.
yup ^
bravo
wow
The whole time I was watching that I was thinking "id HATE to be in that kids guard!"
I would like to see how a guy like Rodolfo does against that style though. I tend to emulate his style more since im 270lbs.
Really impressed by Meragali, and nice sweep by Lo, really simple and subtle.

You see, this is the real problem with BJJ - sandbagging. The gy can almost beat someone like Lo and is yet a brown belt. Yeah right.
Anywoo, is there another link to video that isn't flo grappling? Couldn't find it (beyond highlights with music) on Youtube.
Oh and id have to imagine that kids grip is pretty damn freakish. RIP his fingers by the time he is 40. esssh
HotSteppa - You see, this is the real problem with BJJ - sandbagging. The gy can almost beat someone like Lo and is yet a brown belt. Yeah right.This. I'm sure there is some bullshit philosophical reason as to why this kid is a brown belt, but if you can perform that way against one of the best in the game then you are a black belt.

Can't remember seeing any judo brown belts making it to the olympics.
Promotions are so weird in bjj
Eg Sebastian Brosche from Front line in Norway
Judo black belt, was in national judo team.
Won worlds weight and absolute at purple 2010
Got his brown in 2011/2012
Got bronze at worlds in 2013&2014
Has won world pro (2013), medalled at Europeans, medalled at worlds, won loads of super fights etc
Four years after he got his brown he is still a brown belt, still competing (less often)
Jackson Sousa got held at brown belt for a while as well, about three years, whilst collecting damn near every medal under the sun
Both guys got great coaches and I don't doubt them but from the outside it is hard to understand. I imagine if I got bronze at brown belt worlds my instructor would be tying a black belt around my waist fairly promptly

Can't remember seeing any judo brown belts making it to the olympics. It's nothing to do with philosophy. He won Worlds at purple and got promoted only a year before this. He won Worlds at Brown (weight and absolute) this year. The kid is a phenom. His black belt will come in due time.
In this case, due time was the day before he competed against Lo and at worst, immediately after this match.
Name me another sport where an elite or near-elite level athlete is way past ready for the next level yes is intentionally held back due to weird rules of minimum time frames of rank which by the way tend to happen during an athlete's early prime years given that the minimum age for black belt is 19.
These are the elites of the sport, and this kid is clearly and probably has been at the black belt level for a bit now. What is the point of holding him back?
SlapUsilly -Very true. They should be able to skip the recommendations if they place top 3 in worlds etc.Hywel Teague -SlapUsilly -HotSteppa - You see, this is the real problem with BJJ - sandbagging. Would u look at the guard on that kid.
im sure he's just a young kid that got super good super fast so his coach wants him to get some more experience and maybe mature a little and also put his time in at that belt instead of fast tracking him like they should.
im sure we will see him at the next worlds at black hopefully, especially after keeping the best passer in the game at bay.

This is probably the reason, but if you can compete at a world class black belt level, AND have the technical knowledge of a black belt in BJJ (forgetting even performance for a second) then you should be a black belt. It's odd that anyone is held back. Time is unimportant.
Here's a 16 year old future judo legend competing and giving the then japanese champion hell.
You know what really builds up confidence more than being held back and winning against people you are clearly better than? Performing at this level against a guy that is supposed to run you over.
This is the problem with using a martial arts grading system within a sport. Clearly Meregali can compete at the top level within the sporting confines of BJJ, but his instructor (perhaps) feels that in the martial art aspects of BJJ, he still has to develop.

cottam that guard!!!

Kobe and Lebron come to mind as people who would have wasted time in college ball.
