looking to drop about 40lbs

are protein shakes good as a meal replacement if your lookin to lose weight. I do understand I need to cut my carbs and eat healthier. Also I will be Muay Thai training at night and weight training in the morning.

 Most are about 180 calories.

I'm not sure the whole idea of 'Meal replacement' is a valid approach if you're over 25.

But you could weigh 300lbs, and be 50 years old, so your post is pretty vague.

why don't you go run or get on the exercise bike or elliptical trainer instead of lifting? getting a nice aerobic workout several times a week will burn way more energy than lifting.

Its better than nothing. But if your gonna use it as a meal replacement then drink them very slowly. Example: Sip a 40g shake over a 3-4 hour period.

I would just eat a low fat/high protein food instead, like a can of tuna

The was an article on T-Nation Velocity Diet Lite or something like that. The suggested a shake for breakfast because most fat people skip breakfast and then one in the evening because fat people usually overeat in the evening. The meals betweeen are of the healthy type.

Wouldnt the Muay Thai training cover this.

Widespread, Im 33 and am at 270 right now...and Im not very happy about that. I am startin to train Muay Thai and lift weights, not only for health purposes but also because I enjoy them.

I was told that if im going to be adding weight training protein should be added for muscle repair and which will also help avoiding burn out....something didnt sound right so Im asking. Wouldnt the protein just help me gain weight or would it be a healthier avenue as a meal replacement??

Also, no I wasnt eating right before and I enjoy the occassional BudLight. But Im cutting out alot of the unhealthy habbits....or at least thats the goal

Just eat a can of Tuna???by itself?? Thought tuna was unhealthy due to mercury or something like that?

Ok...simple answer...yes...protein shakes do help as a meal replacement but dont be mistaken that it is a true meal. I'm sure you know that you should have 5-6 small meals a day. 3 actual meals and 2 or 3 snacks. drink the protein shake with ONLY one scoop with low fat milk or water after your weight training workout and you should probably eat some kind of fruit with it for extra nutrients. But I would recomend only having it no more than once a day. Its effective in the fact that it has the protein to help your muscles and its convienent but nothing can replace protein from an animal or dairy.
