Lyoto Machida is currently the number two ranked middleweight and this weekend battles number four ranked Luke Rockhold in the main event of UFC on FOX 15. Machida believes a win over Rockhold will solidify him as the next middlweight title contender:

"I think whoever wins the fight will go for the title. I'm very excited for that. I had a great camp and I'm very confident for this fight," Machida told FOX Sports.

"I believe I'm the next for the title. I believe I can fight the champion. I already have experience fighting for the title at 185 and I think it will be different if I fight (Chris) Weidman again."

Number one contender Jacare Souza also fights at the same event, albeit against unranked middleweight Chris Camozzi. As we have learned in the past, anything can happen though so we will have wait till the dust settles on Saturday to see who emerges as the number one contender.

so soon? Phone Post 3.0

Wouldn't mind that, but my opinion is biased. Lol Phone Post 3.0

You lost your title fight, it takes more than one consecutive win to get a title shot.
Mendes and Machida don't get it, with how minimal the champs fights. No one wants rematches that often, look at Cain vs JDS and Bigfoot Phone Post 3.0

If he were to win this, it would be 2 in a row. Phone Post 3.0

Takes more than one consecutive win? Does that even make sense lol Phone Post 3.0

What about Jacare...

The guy was ready to fight for the title after his last fight and now he's fighting someone way below him.

I don't understand.

If he beats Rockhold he should definitely be next in line. Phone Post 3.0

Based on the Weidman fight there was one round where Machida looked to even have a chance and then Weidman adjusted and controlled the next round. Let someone else (Jacare) have a shot.

Machids won the 4th and 5th round and looked to be dangerous, I can easily see machids taking the 2nd fight Phone Post 3.0

I agree. I think the first fight taught Lyoto something about himself and he will come after Weidman this time.

Though it is an admirable trait, Lyoto's hespect for other fighters keeps him from going apeshit on them.

When he got frustrated against Weidman he finally let us see a glimpse of him coming unglued and it was amazing.

Had he fought that way in the first or second round he could be the champ right now.

I don't understand.

I have a feeling he will get screwed due to him fighting Chris who was recently cut and unranked. If he would have beat Yoel, it would be definite. Phone Post 3.0

Machida has balls of steel, but don't look past Rockhold!

If Machida beats Rockhold, he will get title shot. Given his resume, especially at 205 where he was champ and almost always fought guys much bigger them him and his recent success at MW, it warrants another shot at title if he wins his 2nd in a row. Also, his fight with Weidman was awesome and he almost pulled it off.

Ive never understood this thinking. He just fought for the title and lost. One win doesn't mean he gets another shot. I think Jacare should be next or those 2 fight for #1 contender status.

How many title shots between 205 and 185 has Machida gotten. Phone Post 3.0

Three title shots Rashad, Jones, and Weidman. I think he is close to a second shot at Weidman but IMO Jacare should get the shot first (IF Machida beats Rockhold). Phone Post 3.0

this!!!!

Jacare has earned it!

And this fight may even be used against him, since he is fighting a lower ranked guy. But to be honest, I'd be happy if Machida gets another shot as well.
