Major May Update...

I. Congratulations to August Wallén of Goteborg, Sweden
Congratulations to August Wallén! He won his first Vale Tudo fight on
Saturday, May 6, 2006, at European Vale Tudo 6 "Ragnarök" in
Stockholm, Sweden. His fight was against Paulo Boiko, a BJJ black belt
from Brazilian Top Team with 8 prior professional vale tudo fights.

August won a very tough fight by rear-naked-choke, 3 minutes into
the third round.

Congratulations August!!!

II. Lifetime memberships ending soon
Since January of 1997, the Harris Academy has made lifetime
memberships available to its members. For a one-time investment of
$3000 to $4000, a person can train unlimited classes for the rest of
their life.

Well, as the saying goes, all good things must come to an end.
Beginning in August, the lifetime memberships will cease to exist. So,
if you have been thinking about purchasing a lifetime membership, you
have a few months left to do it.

I know $3000 may seem like a lot of money, but consider this: If you
plan on being around the academy for the next two to three years, you
will spend around $3000 for your training. So why not purchase a
lifetime membership and be done with paying for classes? Besides, in
three years or less, you will have broken even.

Those who purchased lifetime memberships in the late 1990's are still
smiling over the deal they got: $2800 for ten years of unlimited
training. That boils down to $280 per year or $23 a month for
unlimited martial arts training. Not a bad deal in my book!!!!

XVIII. Harris International Training and BBQ
Mr. Richard North, Chief Instructor at the SouthBay Jiu Jitsu Club, will
be hosting a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu workshop, grappling/training session
and BBQ, FREE OF CHARGE, for all Harris International students and
instructors on Sunday, June 4th at 5pm.

Here's the invite from Richard:

Hey guys, I just wanted to invite everyone on June 4th at 5:00 p.m. to
the SouthBay Jiu Jitsu Club for a BJJ lesson with Mr. Harris and
afterwards a BBQ. It is a Sunday. Mr. Harris will be teaching a class and
then we will roll while the BBQ cooks the chow. On the menu will be
burgers, dogs, carnie, chicken, beans, rice, chips, soda, and a cake.

The BBQ will be for the opening of my new school. Also a way to get
some good people down to the school to meet, roll, network and just
have a good time. Everyone is invited... all of Mr. Harris' students and
associated schools. The only thing I ask is that you e-mail me at
southbayjiujitsuclub@cox.net and let me know how many people are
coming with you, so I will have plenty of food on hand.

I look forward to seeing as many Harris International students there as
possible, and I hope to do this every six months or so to get together
with some great people. I am looking forward to hearing from all of
you!

Richard's club is located:

South Bay Jiu Jitsu Club (held at the SouthBay Taekwondo)
3802 Main St Ste 5
Chula Vista CA 91911-6247
(619) 410-1926

For directions, please take a look at this page:

http://www.southbayjiujitsuclub.com/page8.html

Let's all congratulate Richard for opening up his own club and support
him by showing up at this event, even if only for a half hour (cuz I
know some of you are as busy as I am). You will not only learn from
pretty cool things at the workshop I teach, but you will also have the
chance to meet, train and roll with other Harris International Students
and Instructors and develop some new friendships!

I look forward to seeing many of you there!

XIX. New Student Instructional DVD
Well, Susan, Brad, Roy and I just finished filming the first half of the
new student instructional DVD. We will finish the other half next week.
Also, I have almost finished editing the first half. So, come mid-June,
all Harris Academy students will get a new instructional DVD that will
demonstrate the basics of Bruce Lee's Jeet Kune Do, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu,
Kalis Ilustrisimo, Fitness and Self-defense.......FREE OF CHARGE! I think
you will like this product!

And, beginning in late June, this DVD will be available for sale to those
who do not train at our academy.

XX. A Personal Note on Training
I have been training hard in recent weeks to lose weight. I started out
this journey at 248 lbs. around Christmas time. Yesterday, I weighed
myself at my gym, using the same scale, and I was pleasantly surprised
to find that my weight had dropped to 225 lbs. Woo-Hoo!

What have I been doing to lose this much weight? Well, here is a small
glimpse:

  1. I ride a stationery bike at my gym for seven minutes, three times per
week. I turn the setting up to level 13 (a moderately high setting) and
ride the bike as hard as I can for seven minutes.

  2. I perform three (2 minute) rounds of jump rope, twice a day, twice a
    week.

  3. I perform four sets of swings (40 reps), three times per week. I mix
the reps between the 53 lbs. KB and the 70 lbs. KB.

  4. I jog two miles, once a week.

  5. I get Pavelized most Tuesday mornings at 9:30am.

  6. I drink two cans of soda, once a week (instead of my normal three
    cans per day).

  7. I eat lemon meringue pie once a month (instead of my usual 3 times
per month). Keep in mind; I am not talking about a piece of pie. I am
talking about the WHOLE pie : )

  8. I spend about 40 minutes in the sauna each week.

  9. I take supplements.

  10. I sleep more hours during the week.

Back in January, I said I had hoped to reach my goal of 225 lbs. by
summer. Well, now that I have reached my goal a few weeks early, I am
even more excited to keep making progress. Now, I want to see if I can
get down to around 218lbs. (a place I haven't been since 1999).

In addition to having lost 23 lbs. since Christmas, I also feel more
energetic (and have more endurance) on the mats and on the concrete.

Well, that about wraps things up for this update. Thank you for your
time!

Roy Harris

Hello Mr Harris,

I saw somewhere on the internet that you are giving a seminar in france this year. But dont see it listed at your website, and i cant find website anymore where i saw it. Can you give if me any details if there is a seminar?

thanks much!

dutchman,

The seminar hosts for France backed out of the deal last November.
Then they rescheduled the event for this year and backed out a second
time. So unfortunately, I will not be going to France this year. Sorry.

Roy Harris

Roy,

Can you please describe your training with Matt Furey? He has such a bad reputation here but there aren't many first hand accounts of people who have actually trained with him.

Thank you.

Mr. Harris:

You mentioned in an earlier update (some weeks ago) about a possible seminar in the Twin Cities in June. Any word on that?

kikenyoy,

My training with Matt Furey happened long before many people knew
much about him. While Matt certainly has strong opinions about this
and that, I can say this about him:

"His knowledge of wrestling and his ability to convey this knowledge
made a difference in my wrestling abilities back in the middle to late
1990's."

dhunter,

Unfortunately, I will NOT be teaching a seminar in the Twin Cities in
June. Things did not work out this time.

I have asked the group to look at a couple of weekends in September.
However, I haven't heard back from them yet on this. Hopefully, I will
hear something from them before too long.

Roy Harris

Thanks Roy

dutchman,

We are talking with Mr Harris about his annual visit to Ireland (in October).

If you or your group are interested give me a shout at
info@harrisinireland.com

Cheers

Send ya an email.

dutchman,

you got mail!
