Manager: Crucifixion of Palhares gone too far

Rousimar Palhares' manager Alex Davis is one of the most principled figures in mixed martial arts. In his latest article at MMAJunkie, Davis says that the reaction over 'Toquinho' holding the heel hook too long has gone too far.

I'm not defending Rousimar's actions. He did wrong in holding Mike Pierce's ankle that long. But this situation is being way over blown. Rousimar has already been punished. He was denied an obvious "Submission of the Night" bonus, and he was given a four-month suspension by the CABMMA. But this guy is being crucified in the court of public opinion and turned into something he is not: a mean, monstrous person who is out to hurt people. This is simply not the truth.

Dana White got very upset over the incident and cut Rousimar. I get it. I get his perspective. But we were not sent a release letter, nor did we get a phone call. We found out on Twitter. That's a first for me! And then all these people out there crying and whining!

Come on! This has turned into one of the biggest bashing sessions in MMA history. People are gaining media at this guy's expense; that's whats happening.

Rousimar does not do this on purpose. He does it unconsciously. But he will have learned his lesson, and he will fight with his head on, and he will beat everyone put in front of him – maybe in a nicer way! And when this happens, I will remind the world of all of this: There are many truths in this situation. Rousimar has been turned from a transgressor to a victim of public opinion and people's ignorance.

Irony is putting Palhares in a crucifix to where he can get punched and not even be able to tap out

Vote me down if you want, but I don't think Palhares deserves all this. He should be reprimanded and forced to change his ways. He's already been suspended and released from his contract. People are painting this guy as a evil person and by all accounts that is not the truth.

It is as if he has been placed on Kimo's cross only to be dropped by Joe Son.

By all accounts? His own coach (Bustamante) has stated that they got tired of him seemingly intentionally injuring his training partners. He's had multiple warnings, how are you supposed to all of the sudden force him to change his ways?

For you romo heads

Murilo doesn't seem to think so.

Still if the guy could figure out redlight green light it wouldn't be an issue

I will be honest and say that I did not keep up with Palhares at all so I really didn't know much about him. Just watching this fight, and this fight only it seems like the penalty does not fit the crime. Had he let go and the ref didn't stop it then that would have been a huge issue just the same. You have to hold the sub until the ref stops the fight-period. He did hot it a bit longer but it didn't seem very intentional to me. It is not anything like the Daley situation, or Babalu.

Then again, like I said I am not familiar with his history...

Hey JerodR

Before I say anything, I want to let you know that the punishment doesn't fit the crime in my opinion. I do think he should not get his of the night bonus and possibly not give him his win bonus, but let him have one more chance.

That being said, "The history of Paul Harris"

Sounds to me like Bustamante and Palhares have a personal issue between them. So I'm gonna take comments from his former coach with a grain of salt. That said, maybe 'by all accounts' was a bad choice of words. Phone Post 3.0

my opinion doesnt matter but im mixed on this also. that fight was an awesome display of martial arts ability. yes it is really uncool that he held those subs for so long - it seems like he is trying to hurt his opponent. so fine him money. even the last time in UFC you know it was bad but not so bad. from my perspective at least. but his ban was also meaningless. he got like a 3 month ban when he wouldnt have fought for that time anyways so whats it matter? whys that supposed to teach him a lesson? obviously it didnt. maybe they should fix these glaring errors rather than overcompensating.

wrecked Nascimento's ankle:

Palhares wrecks Motto's leg:

Moura meets the same fate:

Negao gets it too:

This incident on its own is not THAT bad, and the "no bonus" + 4 month suspension would indeed be enough.

BUT, there is history. He has done it many times before. And his ex-coach comes up and say he was tired of seeing him hurt training partners! I've never seen Bustamente say anything like that before so we know it was a serious issue.

The only thing I still don't agree is saying he's out of the UFC "for life". Come on. If he has wins outside the UFC for a year or two and looks like he has cleaned up his act, he should be allowed back. In the mean time, he deserves this.
