Marcelo Garcia's NYC class today

kying418 : "I'll be out of the city until at least Sept 23rd or so. However, with Marcelo, and the other great people at the school, I dont think you'll miss not seeing a short fat blue belt..."

I'll be happy to see you there bro.
Here is how I look like : i'm brown belt with an injured knee and my english is not so good. You will find me ... ;-)

Talking about Renzo and Marcelo. I'm a good friend of Renzo too. And I love the guy. So i'll be there training also !

So last Friday, we had our belt graduation and stripe ceromony.

At 6pm, about 25-30 people showed up for class. During this time, Fabio had us pair up with certain people and roll for 5 minutes at a time.

For the whole time, he was taking notes on how well we did. After the class was over at 7:30, he and Marcelo got together to look at his notes and discuss the students progress.

By this time, the class had blown up to around 65 people...everyone knew it was graduation, and even if people didnt think they were up for anything, they still came by to support the other students...like I said, a wonderful small family feel.

Once they were finished talking, everyone lined up from belt and stripe rank. Then Marcelo called each person who got a stripe to come up. His wife ripped off each stripe from the tape roll and Marcelo placed it on each student's belt.

After the stripes were done, Marcelo and Fabio promoted a handful of blue belts and two purple belts.
As each person was called up for a new belt, they were thrown (lightly) by each of the four black belts- Fabio, Marcelo, Tatiana (his wife), and a visiting Black Belt...okay, maybe Tatiana was nice enough to thrown lightly, the others werent as nice lol.

After each person was called up to receive their new belts and thrown, every student made two rows, and took off our own belts to whip them. The blue belts had to go back and forth, while the purples had to go through the line twice. It was pretty funny (and sad) to see, because nobody was taking an easy on the whippings.

After the newly promoted got their whippings, Marcelo notices that some of them were wearing rashguards under their gis. He quickly told the handful of them that they had to go through the line again and get whipped some more. As they took off their rashguards and lined up for more punishment, he just laughed and said he was just kidding.

After this was all done, everyone stayed for pictures, free rolling, answering of bjj questions, and just hanging out.

Then Marcelo invited everyone who was left in class (around 9:30) out to eat.

It was just another great day at Studio X in NYC.

how much is 1 class

It's $40 for a one class fee.

Great post kying418.
It's the kind of same atmosphere in our academy. Very friendly. Can't wait to be there !

kying418 check your PM on nhbgear please. Thanks ;-)

I'm telling you, the atmosphere is such because Fabio and Marcelo are really nice, laid back, and humble guys. Spending time with Marcelo, you really forgot what an amazing bjj competitor he is.

Its really funny when he introduces himself to every new visitor by saying, "Hello, I'm Marcelo"...lol, like they dont know who he is. But that's just how nice he is.

kying - you've gotta be kidding me....

He's adding a workout area too??? Damn I'm glad I saw this - I'll hold off on the YMCA membership and just wait for the big move!!

unfortunately it's contracts I believe, just like renzo's

In certain cases, like if you are visiting nyc for a short time, you can do month to month contract.

theraydiator- its never too early to drop by! Dont wait for the move.

Again.

When you guys see marcelos books. You are going to die. Everything kying says is true. The man is a GOD

Marcelo is the man!!, but no one can train 3-4 times per day.
I'm pretty small 5'2 98lbs, how do I avoid getting stacked all the time?, I'm tired of huge guys just laying on me.

marcelo is the man!!! he is such an extremely friendly and approachable person. =)

i wish i wasnt injured all the time so i can train at the academy more often. i just hope that after i heal up he will continue to teach even after he gets his MMA career up and running. it seems inevitable that he will go on to "bigger and better things" once (not if...just when) he experiences success in MMA.

kying418, has marcel mentioned anything about his plans on teaching, ie how long, etc?

Man what agreat guy to get to train with. Everyone close should take advantage of him being there.

first time I ever wished I lived in NY : ).

"Sounds cool. I wish I wasn't scared to death of the warm-ups otherwise I'd be there every day! lol"

I am definately not a huge fan of the warm ups...but once you see that Marcelo is doing the warms ups with you, and with more effort than everyone else, it kinda inspires you.

I guess you just need to be pretty picky about who you roll with- find people that will let you play your bjj game, and not just stall out on top of you.

Yes, he definately used to train 3-4 times a day. He even told me that he would walk 1 hour in the rain to his class at 6am. Even though he knew none of the other students would show up, he wanted to know that he tried everything he could do to train.

Diox- Make sure you send Marcelo a copy soon, so we can all see it!

Great thread. I plan on getting in there very soon to check it out (sitting on a nasty, ankle-lock injury at the moment..) Cool to hear they are doing well and moving to a bigger spot.

TTT for MG..
