But he has all day. The UFC would never wait to the day of to mandate 5 hours of meds.

Of course not. The UFC doesn't do the testing nor do they control the schedule of the athletic commissions.
Was it different with Global? Thanks;)
Cindy
I was told he did make weight the second try,and had a slightly elevated blood pressure and was cleared to fight by one dr. but not the other.
"But he has all day. The UFC would never wait to the day of to mandate 5 hours of meds"
Exactly.... give him the proper amount of time in the first place.
Lots of guys cut 15 lbs in a day.
Shit, Joe Riggs probably does 20+.
TFN is reporting the director said you can't cut more than 3% because doctors don't consider it to be safe. Do the written rules state that or did he spring that on the fighters when they got there? Sucks if it was the latter.
Cindy
Mike Whitehead beat Kerr as if he was some kung fu guy from the GIA tapes. Kerr shoulve retired long ago, he already destroyed his career, now hesalso ruining whats left of his dignity.
"Lots of guys cut 15 lbs in a day."
it's still unhealthy and stupid.
anybody have a picture???
'Is it really that difficult for a professional athlete to remain close to their fighting weight year around?"
No, it's just really dumb and puts them at a disadvantage.
'Staying thin now days seems like it's even a struggle for a paid, professional athlete. Amazing."
The whole idea is to stay as big as you possibly can until the last possible moment and then cut weight. That way you can put it all back on again before you fight the next day.
Staying thin like Swick who walks at 182lbs leaves you at a huge size disadvantage. That's why he is moving to 170lbs where he will still be one of the smaller guys. Since most of the top guys cut more than 12 lbs.
"it's still unhealthy and stupid."
Stupid is relative, many people are willing to make sacrifices to pursue their dreams. This is a necessary risk for most pro combat sport athletes.
Pro sports in general are not healthy.
Also it being stupid and unhealthy is totally irrelevant to the discussion going on here.
Check back in when you can add something.
"This is a necessary risk"
I defy you to explain that statement.
edit: "everyone does it" is not a good reason. If that's the ONLY reason, weigh the fighters an hour before the fight. Problem solved.
^
Everyone does it is actually a very good reason. It means that fighters who do not will find themselves at a major disadvantage.
"weigh the fighters an hour before the fight. Problem solved."
Yes causing major fights to be cancelled after the fans are in the arena, as well as a huge health risk that no state would ever sanction... all while robbing promotions of the financial benefits of holding a weigh-in the day before the event will really solve problems. / end sarcasm.
I weighed 114;bs in HS. I could not beat the 105lb or 112 lb wrestlers. I could beat the other 98lb wrestlers. I had the option of cutting weight or not wrestling... ergo it was neccesary for me to cut weight if I wanted to wrestle at all.
"Yes causing major fights to be cancelled after the fans are in the arena,"
I find that somewhat ironic in the context of this thread...
smac, your arguments could be used for steroid use... am I to assume you are for that as well?
^
Agreed, would you like to see it happen at just about EVERY event?
LOL@more smac1 input. It's entertaining how you trivialize all this... Athletes are people too you know..
Are you seriously suggesting that it is somehow impossible to end the practice of cutting weight? That there is NO way to make fighters compete at their real weight instead of attempting to cheat the limit?
if so, fuck it... weigh in a month before the fight and let em walk in however they want.
Another example of the how the rules that were added to the original UFC's have caused problems. At least there's a good episode of Andy Griffith on right now, the one where Barney finds $250,000 in a briefcase and poses as a big time gambler to lure in the robbers who lost it.
i loved that episode!!!!^^^^^
"smac, your arguments could be used for steroid use... am I to assume you are for that as well?"
If you really think that is a comparable arguement then I recommend suicide.
