Here's another audio interview that I did with Martin Rooney.
Martin Rooney Interview
Martin lists the BJJ/MMA athletes that he works with within the first few minutes. Many are top names in BJJ and I don't think they would choose Martin if he wasn't able to produce results.
Gusto,
Martin does some good stuff and some bad some in my opinion, the practical aspect of which is largely good. Here's a brief write up i did on this forum about 3 years ago on his Training for Warriors product:
"A great deal of the book is "theory" to set up his program recommendations, and his "theory" is ripped off from Bompa (with no apparent citing that i saw, and with the nice catch phrase "revolutionary!" attached to it), misinterpreted terribly, and fraught with contradiction. IMO if you're going to fuck around with theory as indepth and abstract as that, you better have your shit together, and i dont think Rooney was successful. Don't get me wrong, many of the programs themselves are good, and like i said before the warmup is quite good. The cutting info is solid. Rooney also seems to be a great guy. However, the parts of book attempting a stab at actual excercise science failed miserably."
I'll have to give this interview a listen.

Just listened to the interview. Good stuff. didn't realize BJJworkouts was Jason! What's up man?

Hey Doug,
What's up homie? I hope you're well. How about we get you on BJJWorkouts? Deal? Next up is Taku and if i acn ever find Scrapper again.
Renzo gassed quickly in his last fight. just saying..
Martin has guys that work directly with him that are always in great shape:
Almeida
Jim and Dan Miller
Edgar
Rooney is pretty top notch. I have been through a few of his workouts and enjoy them (well hate them, but you know what I mean).
From my understanding from inside sources Renzo doesn't really like to prepare very well for fights, conditioning wise and I'm not sure that Martin actually works with Renzo.
Not sure what happened with Rolles. I'll see Martin this weekend and ask him. I'm sure that Rolles situation has more than one factor.
wasn't Rolles out preparing in New Mexico for his fight?
Yes he was
Jason,
I'm in mang. And i'm sure I can track down scrapper for you too.

Tom and Gusto,
I personally think that how much s&c helps an athlete over and above what they normally might do on their own depends on the athlete, but probably isn't much. Now my take on this is based on what s&c coaches typically do, which is GPP, and perhaps some SPP (or at least what they think is SPP). What a coach accomplishes with "high-end" s&c techniques is not going to account for a vast improvement over, say, just running on your own and lifting weights on top of your skill work.
I have always believed this, but why be a coach then? I definitely struggled with this especially working with Kenny. I had to always ask if I was doing enough. My thoughts:
1. Even a 1% improvement in the bottom line (winning or losing) typically means the difference at the most elite level. I believe there is such a difference with the right coach.
2. Personally, I did a lot more than s&c. 99% of my time with most athletes is spent on their nutrition and their lifestyle/wellness. This is by far what most fighters need anyway, and you can see substantial improvements in performance. It seems most coaches don't spend any time in these areas, and their athletes suffer.
Rooney clearly is interested in the tactical elements of coaching, and the info i've seen is sound. It's impossible to say to what extent he really works with these athletes, or they really follow his advice...

Rolles had a rib injury during training that affected his cardio for that fight.
Spoke with Martin this weekend.
He hasn't worked with Renzo in 5 years and Rolles trained in Colorado and Greg Jackson's for that fight.
gusto -Yes, believe me he could easily get out of shape and in to BAAAAD shape in 1 camp.Tom Lawlor - wasn't Rolles out preparing in New Mexico for his fight?
I dont get the implication here. so for 10 or so years he was training with rooney and he was in great shape, but new mexico fucked him over in 1 camp
Not saying that is what happened, but it is EXTREMELY possible.
