Mastering Rubberguard Quick-Review

Ok so I just checked out Edgar's book and gave it a quick look over.. here are my initial thoughts on the thing..

Introduction.. Eddie spends most of the intro talking about the benefits of Marijuana, it was suprizingly a decent read.. then he tells us about how he and Joe Rogan fell in love, which I kinda skipped over, no need to read that shit.. he also included a nice little story full of Black/Mexican racial sterotypes for all his Stormfront fans..

Stretching section was decent.. along with 1/2 guard probably the best part of the book..

Half-guard.. once again Edgar renames a bunch of old moves and acts like he invented them.. nothing new for me here, but then again I train at a world class academy so for you guys that train in a shithole and don't have good instruction I'd say its good.. alot of basic 1/2 guard.. most useful part of the book IMO..

Rubberguard.. LOFL.. ok now that I know what all those stupid names mean I am even more convinced this is nothing more than a "novelty" guard.. best part of this was variations off of omoplata that everybody should already know anyway.. oh and whats with all the anti-semetic names like "Drowning the Jew"..

after seeing this I would say don't waste your money just download the mini-instructional floating around on the net..

again keep in mind guys at my academy have been playing around with this kind of guard game for years so its nothing new to me.. infact we had a guy named Ben at our academy that was very good at Rubberguard.. he even invented a few moves from it.. its extremely easy to counter if you know what your doing and probably isn't very good for MMA unless your a fuckin freak like Shinya Aoki whom is also a BJJ blackbelt and World Class Judoka..

Infact don't take my word for it, here is what a well recognized and unbiased professional fighter had to say on the subject..

Ok, I probably should keep quiet, but I honestly don't recall Eddie ever saying that he was a great MMA instructor. Maybe I'm wrong. Eddie seems like a somewhat down to earth guy, and I am pretty sure he knows that his style of no-gi Jiu-Jitsu is awesome for sub grappling, but is extremely impractical for MMA at the competitive level...

I think the "bragging" that many people speak of is simply him trying to promote himself. (which is wahat 90% of the people who come on here are trying to do.)

The thing is, he has no MMA experience, and it's not like he is breeding this great group of MMA guys or something... you people have to remember that just cause you train w/out a gi, doesn't mean that you know the first thing about MMA... I'm not bashing eddie, I'm just saying that you guys are putting him in an akward position by saying he's an "mma instructor"

I mean, look at the guys who have come out of eddie's as far as NHB... You've got a few guys who are great competitiors, but lack the ability to defend or absorb strikes, and then you got a guy who is just an internet fanboy that drew with a former gay soft-core porn star while wearing headgear.

TTT for the benefits of Marijuana

"in fact we had a guy named Ben at our academy that was very good at Rubberguard.. he even invented a few moves from it."

All Ben needs to do now is go tap Royler, retire, write a book, and relax as we all pour our money into his pocket. ;)

I'm sorry, I think its one of the best books out there. Quality paper, tons of color pics (including alternate angles) and a descriptive game plan including the moves, etc.

dan black thread:quick review......HE HATES EDDIE.

but remember he trains at the world class best school in the world

I thought it was the 10th planet kids who hate dan black... fuck who can keep up anymore?

I read the book. Dan's mostly right on, Bravo renames moves that already exist and a ton of that book you should know if you're training at a Gracie, G Barra, Machado, Alliance, Nova U., etc. caliber club.

But I didn't think it was bad as far as it goes. Probably really helpful for people in outland areas/ garage training guys. If nothing else, know how to defend (which is so very do-able - especially when you can rain strikes).

Take it for what it is.

"dan black thread:quick review......HE HATES EDDIE."

lofl.. hey I was pretty unbiased this time.. I said the 1/2 guard shit was pretty good and so is the stretching.. :)

"but remember he trains at the world class best school in the world"

I wouldn't say we're the best in the world, I think that's stupid to say that any one camp is "the best in the world".. but we're deffinately world-class.. I mean look at the guys that I've trained with over the past 8 years.. I don't have to list names cuz you fags all know them...

now look at the guys that your school has produced.. don't hate.. appreciate..

"Dan's mostly right on, Bravo renames moves that already exist and a ton of that book you should know if you're training at a Gracie, G Barra, Machado, Alliance, Nova U., etc. caliber club."

I guess Namecaller is the only other person on this thread that trains at a quality school..

Obviously dan black is much smarter than the machado brothers.

As it was the machado brothers who said they credit Eddie with inventing the rubber guard. I guess dan black is at a school that's older and greater than all the machado brothers combined.

There's nothing "freakish" about Aoki's rubber guard subs...if you know those set-ups, which are basic rubber guard, and the other guy hasn't spent a decent amount of time rolling with guys with good rubber guard, you're going to get caught. Same is true for Dean Lister's. How often do you think their opponents spent learning how to defend rubber guard? If what you're saying is,"Only top level guys can make rubber guard work for MMA!" (which is bullshit) than what you're really also saying is,"If you're a top level grappler in MMA, learning rubber guard can really help your sub percentage."

And Eddie wouldn't be THE jiu-jitsu guy at Legends if Randy Couture, Bas, and Karo thought the guy wasn't a top quality instructor. Maybe their opinion on what type of grappling instruction works for MMA is better than yours, but if you're smarter than all the Machado's and go to a school that makes Legends look like a local YMCA cheap Thursday night class, you know better than all those guys.

Maybe you should write a book if you know so much beter than all these famous MMA fighters and grapplers.

I just ordered the book so I'll let you know what I think after I read it. Interesting perspectives though...

He hates it... WOW WHAT A SUPRISE!!!

time will tell who knew what they were talking about here.

Grabs popcorn

I got the book from a friend...I think its real good. Probably best "production value" out of any instructional book (color tabs, names, everything)...as far as the techniques, theres alot of good shit to use.

Only thing I dont like about it is I think alot of it is meant for either really thin guys, or lanky guys. If you are built like Arrona or stocky, rubber is pretty difficult to pull off.

For 20 bucks bro the book is worth it, imo

"Only thing I dont like about it is I think alot of it is meant for either really thin guys, or lanky guys. If you are built like Arrona or stocky, rubber is pretty difficult to pull off."

LOL
Not that I disagree with what you say. But I'm a tall thin lanky flexible guy so I pretty much sit in the middle of your definition of who the book is good for.

And yea I have the book and fuckin love it !

:)

i think the main point of that review was to rub it in eddie's face that dan downloaded it instead of paying for it. kinda catty and bitchy, but hey, whatever.

I have masterbated to the pics of Eddie Bravo putting Rogan in the Jailbreak
...Great Book!!!

Schembri's guard never stopped Chonan or Hamanaka from pounding on him

Honestly, some of those names are super fucking stupid. Some anti-semitic, lots of drug addict references, the "retard" positions, etc. I'm not a pc overly sensitive guy. It just seems very childish and lame. As if he's just trying to get attention and show how cutting edge he is. Can you imagine Renzo or Liborio doing shit like that? Imagine having Michael Jordan as your basketball coach, and having him name all of his techniques shit like that. You'd be like WTF is wrong with this guy?

And i'm not an Eddie hater. I got the book because i'm very flexible and used rubber guard like techniques when i first started bjj. I thought i was just making up stupid shit so i thought it was awesome when i saw it was a real technique that could be implemented.
